When people such as Patel call themselves politicians (they really aren't) you realise there isn't much hope for fairness or honesty.

With so many useless and cretinous morons in public life it's about time we left them off the Politics thread and instead, we had a new 'Idiots and Arseholes' thread. That way no one confuses these people for anything other than what they are.

Patel is a perfect example of what the whole Brexit ****storm has done to the Tory Party in the last 4 or 5 years. Anyone with any spark of human decency, of original thought, or of even basic competence, has been ruthlessly purged from the Parliamentary Tory ranks. The Ken Clarkes, the Dominic Grieves, the Oliver Letwins, all of whom could at least articulate a coherent thought without insult or rancour, all are gone. All we have left are the dregs , most of whom in any normal circumstances would not be fit to hold public office.

Guy Verhofstadt says that the EU should unilaterally allow British students to make use of the Erasmus student exchange programme, in the hope that Britain will come back into the EU in the future.

The significance should not be lost. Basically they are saying you are on your own.

Also acting in the interests of their populations as was the Netherlands by stopping all but essential journeys to Belgium or Sweden's neighbours closing their borders. What is significant is the EU saying you can't have the benefits without the responsibilities. No cherry picking.

I have to say that this reaction is exactly the kind of thing people warned about during the Brexit vote. There are a lot of things wrong with the EU just as there are probably even more things wrong with the UK parliament. However, I think that the benefits of the EU outweigh the disadvantages. It has staggered me that people still believe we are better out of the EU as opposed to being in.

What I think will happen next is that the new, English strain of Covid will mean that trade between the continent will cease in the short term as Europe strives to keep it out. Countries with whom we are looking for trade deals such as the US, Australia and Canada will ban flights. More locally, the Scots and Irish will be incensed that English lockdown measures have failed and put Scotland and Ireland at peril. You cannot blame Boris for the virus mutating but he is entirely responsible for creation the situation where this is possible.

It is a shame that the people who created this sh/t storm are not the ones most likely to be affected. I the media does it's job and hold the likes of Farage to account after we are out of this mess.
