While Spuds fans and the media are creaming their pants over Pierre,(another article about him on the Beeb) his replacement just goes quietly on with his business...
Just got this from someone my brother knows ... “On the horizon right to left, the, at that time, three chimneys of the town coal fired power station, (the left hand one was later taken down), Pirelli General’s chimney, the floating crane behind it, the Queen Mary, & the Civic Centre Clock Tower. Overdell Court would be built where the trees are bottom left. We saw this photograph recently & I am certain that someone will tell you which match it was” So - come on, someone (Fats?) - what was the game?
Not that early a photo. Looking at the shadows I would suggest 3pm. Looks like the band were still on the pitch. Edit. Looks like a winter game, judging by the trees. Did they kick off at 2pm pre floodlights?
The complete absence of any traffic in Archers Road, as well as Burlington Road and Newcombe Road on the other side of the Dell, suggests it was either wartime or soon after. Has to be around late 40’s anyway.
Someone has told me it was April 1949 ..... So .... it could be ..... https://www.11v11.com/matches/southampton-v-west-ham-united-09-april-1949-104978/
Good detective work Holmes, to make sure we could count the crowd, 25,644... No Ted Bates or Charlie Wayman that day, no wonder we lost!
My dad worked on QM for 13 years but I think that was probably just before he joined. Would have definitely been at the match tho. Rather nice thinking he would have probably been in the crowd
I’m pretty sure my dad was stationed at HMS Daedalus at Lee-on-Solent at that time, in which case he would almost certainly have been there.
No confirmation yet but I can't see why not. Not sure how they will allocate the tickets though, maybe everybody that wants to go has to apply and then they just do a ballot in the same way that they are doing for season ticket holders that said they wanted to go to league games.
Does anyone know where I can get photos of the family stand at the Dell?Where I spent years 82-87 standing uncovered drinking bovril.
I've just seen Crawley Town have put out ticket info for their Leeds game so i'd imagine we will be having fans too if still allowed.
Used to sit at the back of the family section...do you know what I miss from those days. Just a clue...not the single ladies toilet. A decent cup of tea...why is it impossible to get a decent cup of tea in the 21st Century in state of the art stadia.
