Na disagree - Poch assembled the best parts of that squad. Finally took Spurs into the Champions League places. Built a well drilled side that even made it to the Champions League final on a fairly reasonable budget.

The question for me is wether he is quite good enough to compete with Klopp/Guardiola - i feel like he's just below those guys.

If I could pick an Arsenal manager I would still take a risk and go Nagelsmann although Allegri and Simeone are also both interesting.

The people saying don’t sack Arteta don’t seem to realize that there is always a point where you can’t just keep a manager to keep a manager.

Keeping the faith sounds nice, but if we keep sliding down the table playing like **** what is the purpose of it? When do we stop keeping the faith? When we’re in the bottom 3? When we’re in the championship?

 

Now that I think about it, this is probably the one type of manager we have yet to try. Weve tried:
winner / experience (Emery)
prodigal son / gamble (Arteta)

a safe steady-handed manager is what weve yet to get.

We are 20th in the league for chances created. 18th in the league for % of crosses completed. 18th in the league for quick transitions. Lowest points tally and goals scored at this stage since the 1950s. We look like losing to everyone. He's clearly alienated certain players from the team.
He talks about 'non-negotiables' and 'high standards', when he starts Xhaka, Lacazette, Willian, Holding and Bellerin every week, despite their shocking displays.
We have promising players coming through, who are scoring and looking dangerous in the Europa, yet doesn't give them a chance/a place on the bench for the league games, when the senior players aren't cutting it.

The reason why Xhaka isn't getting much criticism is because: A) these issues have been going on from before the Burnley match. B) Arteta is the one who selected Xhaka despite him being a liability. And C) we expect this from him because he has previous.

We have 7 red cards in less than a year of Arteta being here. Ask yourself why that is. It's because the players aren't enjoying their football, so their frustrations boil over and subsequently overreact.

And on top of this, we have moles leaking private information to the press, which evidently isn't a morale booster.

Arteta has potential to be a very good manager, but I don't believe this was the right job for him as a first one. He's never had to face so much adversity like this. It was always going to be a risk appointing him, and things would get worse if it didn't work out. That's exactly what has happened.

 

There's still plenty of time for Arteta to turn this around.

 

I agree with this but thats not the issue.

I really dont think he will turn it around. its a very negative, toxic (not because of fans), low-confidence atmosphere. He is a manager with no experience in this situation. As a player it is tough to look at Arteta now for guidance out of this slump.

I really think he will be gone by mid january.

 

All we need are a couple of goals and the confidence will come flowing back.

The league position is bad and we are in a hole right at this moment. But things can change quickly.

If we are 15th at the end of Feb/March, then yes we should start panicking, but not at the moment.

 

Im more concerned by Edu's comments that we wont be spending big this transfer window and that Arteta is "doing a great job"

I realize he has to say this, and I realize that with the financial impact of COVID, it makes sense that we cannot really spend.

But keeping Arteta revolves around actually strengthening the team, and "giving him a few transfer windows". If we dont really sign anyone how are we supposed to get better?

 

We definitely need a creative player in the middle. Was hoping we might go in for Isco in Jan. But yeah, with no cash that's gonna be an issue

 

I think we would benefit from some smart raw signings like ca 2005-2010.

There really are a few quality players in the championship that can step up to the premier league for example. they would probably only cost ~15m each.

But in the past few years, maddison went to leicester from norwich, Greelish was available, Leeds had a few quality players, so they are there, but to really 'find' one its up to the scouts.

 

I still think we are better off with the Martinelli, Saliba, Guendozi's, Saka's.. The other players who have already hit their level like Xhaka, Elneny, Holding's need to be done away with.

He's a prick for sure but potentially elite.

I've never seen him do anything better than Willock. In fact Willock has more to his game and he's not THAT good.

 

Yeah but you are weirdly negative about most players.

If I think back to our best games under Emery; Guendouzi was pretty much running the show. He was also one of the few players putting in good performances when the rest of the team didnt turn up. Similar to Saka now.

He can be infuriating and petulant for sure but he was only 19 when he broke into our first 11.
Now at 21, I bet he makes a big impact at Hertha Berlin.

 

Only about **** players, especially if they're nobs.

We've got lots of good footballers. Leno, Gabriel, Tierney, Partey, Saka, Pepe, Auba.

The rest are a bit meh or too young to call. Guendouzi is in that camp.
