Niall Quinn has insisted his departure from the role of Sunderland chairman will not spell the end of Steve Bruce's time as manager.

Quinn stepped down as chairman to take on an international development post on Monday, with owner Ellis Short becoming the new chairman with immediate effect.

There has been speculation about Bruce's future at the Stadium of Light following a poor start to the season for the Black Cats, who are currently 16th in the Premier League table after Saturday's 2-2 draw with West Brom.
However, Quinn believes Short has faith in the Black Cats boss and will give him the opportunity to turn things around.

"Steve is not isolated by this - it's the exact opposite," the Irishman said in the Daily Mail.

"It's time for him to build a closer relationship with Ellis.

"Steve will get time for this team to gel. There's another window looming. Unless the situation becomes apocalyptic, and it's no good worrying about that, Steve will get time.

"Steve will get time for this team to gel. There's another window looming. Unless the situation becomes apocalyptic, and it's no good worrying about that, Steve will get time."

"For the overall good of the club this is right. I am happy, absolutely. Ellis is happy - he is speaking to the manager today. You'll find the manager will be happy tonight."

He added: "Ellis will be a great chairman. The beauty of Ellis is that he has a presence. He has authority, he demands serious attention. After three years, he also understands football's snakes and ladders nature, that it's not about under-reaction or over-reaction.

"This can be the making of Steve Bruce. Steve has been in a jumpy world at clubs before, where he read things in the media, but with Ellis he won't. Ellis is straightforward, a real man, no whispering.

"He's not an operator. An operator runs with the hares and hunts with the hounds and to an extent I had to do that.

"Ellis is way above that. Don't expect him to be a media darling. He doesn't worry what's said. And he doesn't need to go out and sell himself because every Sunderland fan knows what he's done in the last three years."

    No Man City move

Despite the announcement of Quinn's new role coming in the same statement as the one which revealed he was standing down as chairman, rumours were rife that he was headed for the Manchester Cityboardroom.

He stressed: "I am not going to Manchester City.

"It surprises me. Everybody knows it's not true yet in the last 24 hours the number of people who have come up to me to say, 'Oh aye, off to Man City', is incredible. I know they know it's not true and they know I know it's not true.

"It's that showbiz thing in football. You have to accept it. It's usually a player going to another club. What I'm meant to say is, 'I'm flattered to be linked'.

"It's crap. I loved Man City and my time there and I'm delighted for their fans the way things are going - but it ain't my club."

Look like were stuck with Bruce till "the situation becomes apocalyptic". Slightly worrying but a good read and sounds like the right move and sounds like Mr Short will be very hands on!

Wonder why Bruce will be so happy after his chat with Mr Short?

The bookies are believing it, too - Bruce's odds have gone from 2/1 to 9/4. They're not believing it by much mind - just a quarter point. But it certainly doesn't sound like a good day for this club's progress.

Whatever Quinn or Short says now..over the next few weeks his fate will be determined. another bunch of defeats and more and more empty seats at the SOL...there is only one outcome

"not good for this clubs progress"

Apparently the owner does not agree with you, if what Quinn is saying is correct...

I think Quinn is spot on but it all depends on how you read it. I read it that Bruce will be told by Short he will have csh to spend in January and forget the rumours, Short and Short alone will decide. Improve and all will be fine.

However I also read, dont improve and thats it, Bruce will know exactly what he needs to do and what the outcome will be if he fails.

I wonder if another empty seat will help convince him? Because if this is true, that's what he's getting.

That could mean "here's a fat cheque and a P45, now you can piss off to Portugal!!

so you are going to stop supporting the team, even if both Ellis and Quinn feel Bruce is the right man (for now)?

I live in France I envy those who can get to the games, so when someone says they wont go to the game, just because, in their opinion, the manager is wrong then I just want to shake them.... ;)

If I see a bad product, I don't buy it. Short and Quinn can think what they like about it, and so can you, but if I don't think their product is up to scratch, I'll decide whether to continue paying for it thank you.

LOL! What else is Quinn going to say lads? :emoticon-0112-wonde

"Steve will get the sack next week. I wouldn't give him his cards, but Ellis will if we get beat at Arsenal!"

The bookies remain unconvinced by "the spin."

If I was Short I would say the following to Bruce.

Look Brucie I have got millions just come in from the Lone Star Asia deal, I think you the man to take us forward, we have got a hard couple of months before the transfer window opens, you keep us in contention of the top ten by Jan and I will back you with 40 million in the window.

That should motivate Bruce to get us as high up the table as possible knowing he can get a couple of top quality signings when the window opens.

Half of me would be delighted with Sunderland having 40 mill to spend, the other half would be **** worried about how Bruce would spend it.

Anyway I'm pretty sure Short won't put another 40 mill in until he sees a chance for Europe, not top 10!

I'm not quite sure about your wording mate. Let me suggest something a little more apt : "You've f**ked up for nine months solid. Now get down the dole office where you belong you useless freeloader." Or something similar. That's about right, I reckon.
