I'd argue the old European Cup was harder to win. In that you had to be Champions of your country, no other entrants were allowed. Also no recovering in the multiple league stages of Europe, it was a straight knock out competition. Hence why it took so long for a British club to win it (Celtic then Man Utd).
I agree that CL drop outs going into it devalues it massively. We only dropped one place in our recent season in it despite losing our top two goalscorers the summer before. Saying that we didn't get past the group stage. Played a lot of games the first half of that season though due to the league cup run. Edit- two places.
Them boys only got near your 1st team cos you had a transfer ban bro, what's the chavs record like previous to last year? I . I'll wait.
Agree with all this. You could lose a few games and still progress ffs. Just chuck em all in a bag and draw it. If Real Madrid draw Bayern in the 1st round then so be it.
Klopp was moaning about the Wednesday/Saturday schedule for the same reason. If you're in the Champions League, then you can have bigger gaps. Friday/Wednesday/Sunday, for example. Europa League is always Thursday/Sunday. You also end up playing CL teams that have had an extra day of rest or two. We played Chelsea last weekend after they'd played on Tuesday and we'd played on Thursday. It didn't give them an advantage though, as we made 10 changes. That's the sort of squad you need for the Europa. Everton could probably handle it. A side like Burnley can't and it crippled their season when they qualified for it.
@Blueman You fancy some action? seeing as ginge is so shook he won't even reply to me the massive fanjita. Chelsea beat Liverpool you get my username for a season, we beat you I take yours for a season? draw voids bet.
Would definitely be more exciting but money talks. I don't even bother with the group stages tbh. They're going the opposite way though and making the groups bigger I believe. Looking forward to klopp and pep moaning about the fixture congestion that brings...
One of the biggest match fixes ever came in the UEFA Cup after Forest's European Cup win. I will never forget their game against Anderlect. It took over a decade for the truth to come out, what most decent football supporters already knew, that Anderlect had bribed the ref.
