The problem is that some decisions like checking for offside (which doesn’t involve any human judgement) could take more than 30 seconds. Tackles inside the box initially given as pens may be good and need the pitch refs to check it out. Ultimately judgement decisions should be made by the pitch ref not VAR who is only there to support. This may take more than 30 seconds. the reality is that we would all prefer a correct decision within 2 or 3 minutes instead of a wrong one within 30s. The technology is out now impossible to pretend it doesn’t exist.
But there has to be balance between getting accurate decisions vs the time taken. At the moment, it's taking refs a long time to still make the wrong decision. It's ruining the flow of the game. Decisions have to be made a lot quicker to avoid sucking the fun out of the sport.
The reality is give them 2=3 mins is no guarantee of the correct decision and i'm not convinced there is a "correct" decision in some cases for example the recent "foul" on Harry Kane by Lallana .
While we're at it, they need to get rid of injury time. Stop the clock with injuries, subs, var, time wasting etc and play till 90mins are up
Going back to the idea of introducing a margin of error (similar to Eredivisie) - whilst this would help a bit, we will still seem very close decisions being called. I took this from Dale Johnson who is an analyst at ESPN: -------------------- Analysis of how margin of error could have affected all 16 VAR offside decisions in the Prem. - 5 of 14 disallowed count - Of the 5, 3 are Liverpool - Three could have changed result (2 Liverpool) - Only goal allowed would be ruled out on "Umpire's Call" Full thread:
Loll it's the most laughable argument ever. We've had the most VAR overturns this season with 8 - which is approx 4-5 more than the next team. I'm not saying that 8 of those decisions were incorrect but it does highlight how marginal a lot of our decisions have been (and some have been completely wrong and harsh).
Well that's quite clearly not true. I'll never find any decision taking 3 minutes acceptable, no matter how 'right' it is. And I've been at Wembley where a blatantly wrong offside decision has gone against us in a cup final. Still take that over what we have now.
Found this on Reddit re. Ben White’s position for the Salah “offside”. This has been done using MagicPoser app and aligning it with VAR footage. The first image is what the VAR used to determine offside. Looks fair enough??As you can see because it’s White’s right foot supposedly playing Salah offside there’s no thought gone into how he could even possibly be standing up with that foot further forward than his left shoulder. The second picture is the first image merely rotated to show the lineman’s view had he have actually seen it. The left shoulder is playing Salah on by a good 12 inches. please log in to view this image please log in to view this image
That's quite interesting JB - and it highlights what Saint says all the time - the technology isn't advanced enough and / or it isn't being used properly by the idiots in charge.
If they could produce an image from the linesman's view it would be a start. The above app. image shows just how distorted you can make a body posture appear without thought or common sense that the player couldn't possibly still be on his feet if his right foot is nearer the goal than his left shoulder.
They need a similar method to that of the goal line technology. It needs a suit of cameras or a mobile camera that can always follow the last defender from a horizontal view and not the TV footage.
It's been said before, but put sensors in boots and go by feet alone. That should be able to give extremely quick decisions without controversy. It's arbitrary anyway, so what does it matter which part of the body is used? Your armpit can't get into a goal-scoring position without your feet generally being nearby.
