this was mentioned in the commentary ( Bein ) of our game and seems a bit better but our lot would still have their lines to dick about with .
Still can't get over the fact that the one thing that VAR might have been useful for they seem insistent on not using it for which is holding / rugby tackling oppo players at free kicks & corners .

That diagram offers the most visual sense I've seen in explaining how the system could work in determining close offside calls. It possibly makes too much sense for PGMOL to adopt it though. Not that I'm cynical or anything. <whistle>

I agree far to sensible, what they want is a system they have introduced, not something "Johnny Foreigner" has dreamed up. For God's sake we invented the game, don't ye know!

It certainly seems an improvement, but do they determine what is 5cm on each individual pitch? Because the distance to the camera will alter with the stadium.
Do the lines taper as they recede across the pitch according to the rules of perspective? If not, then they're representing a wider area on the far side than the near.
Also, when I've seen those red and blue lines superimposed near a white pitch-marker line they look fairly similar, and the white lines are more like 10cm or more aren't they?

The same questions remain, the greater the margin of error they allow, the less likely it is to be an overall improvement on the linesmen. I know there's a lot of criticism of refs in the PL but the linesman don't make that many blatant errors.
Imo, the constant disruptions and slowing of the game are simply not justified by the perceived improvements.

Newcastle game postponed because of covid. Interesting to see what numbers are like as lots of other teams have had to play with players and managers out. In the cup game team even got kicked out because of it against spurs

I don't know any more about the measurements other than what I've read and copied here. The Dutch version is an improvement on what we have solely for the fact that they have incorporated a line measurement that allows for the possibility that the lines won't always touch and when they don't then VAR doesn't make the decision. I'm not sure how our lot draw the lines that results in them always touching but the Dutch seem to have made the offside decision a lot easier to decide and more importantly, to explain.

There was a report earlier today that said they had to shut down the training ground because of an outbreak. Numbers of cases in the general population are particularly high in the North East atm.

VAR needs to go. I thought it was potentially a good idea when they were bringing it in but it's proving week after week how bad and detrimental to the sport it is. That's down to both the technology itself and piss poor implementation. It's taken/taking a large organic part out of the game, and essentially I'd just rather have awful line calls and decisions (since they're going to remain) made by actual people again, that you can then heinously abuse, than some system and set of parameters that they can't figure out

how is everyone btw ? not been around much

Staggering my way through my dotage, thanks mate - and you?
    Nice to see you back.
I thought VAR was a mistake from the beginning - I didn't realise just how big a mistake it was going to turn out to be.
There's a reason football is the most popular and widespread game in the world, it's because it's so good - but they're doing their best to **** it up.
We moan about things all the time, and we always will - but it wasn't really broken and didn't need fixing.

Staggering similarly through life, working a lot which is good as it gets me out, since it's still been a job to go out to do.

I gave it the b of the d but it's seeming like an increasingly massive mistake and they should've left it alone, as you say a lot of the attractive and entertaining parts of football have been removed now, I'd rather be bemoaning a terrible offside or pen decision as the game continues regardless, rather than staring at several screens, several times whilst nothing happens.

Hawkeye works well in tennis and cricket because it never seems to intrude on the natural flow of the game or take anything away from it, in fact it actually adds to those sports in its own way. VAR hasn't proved to be the same. It's like DRS in F1, that should be got rid of as it's just artificial performance enhancement that further takes driver skill out of the equation placing emphasis on the performance of the cars, which is already far too influential, even without the DRS.

This is the key. In fact, technology does work well in football when it comes to goal line decisions. The technology works but more importantly, the decision is made within seconds. Part of this is that it eliminates the need for a human to enter the process and confuse things.

My stance is VAR can work well but there needs to be allowances and decisions need to be made within 30 seconds. If a decision requires longer than that, then it's far too close to call and we should go ahead with the ref's original call.
