What Away day stories do you have then anything welcome I heard a copper on saturday walking past the Hull Fair on the way to the match and i just catched what he said, "You come all that way and get arrested what a bellend"
Some of my memories. I remember twaggin' school with my mates to go see City lose at Norwich in 2005. Last away day. Me and my mates crashed on the way down to Peterborough this year. Nobody was hurt. Other than that our good luck was in that day. After the crash, it was getting a bit late, and now we could get to the ground by walking, but the traffic policeman, who'd shown up, said we could get a lift with him to the match.Once he'd dropped us off, he made a hasty retreat, because he didn't want to get roped into policing the football. After that we got the train back for free, as we were told to pay against the insurance on the car and to collect a letter from the train conductor, but none of them could be arsed to do their job correctly. I'm not complaining though, would have had to fork out alot for it. We won and all. top day. Sometimes you remember the day out, as much as the match itself. City played well that day and Mclean's goal was a great finish. The away end was in great voice for the full 90 minutes aswell. Best away day. Away at Sheff Wednesday, where we won 4-2 at Hillsborough. We set off late and got into the ground, after queing up with several thousand other city fans outside. We heard a goal had been scored, so we rushed in to find they were 1-0 up. Wasn't to matter, in the end, as City took charge of the match after that and dominated it, scoring 3 goals in quick succession at our end. The City fans, in the ground, were loving it. There must have been 7 thousand City fans that night, in the Leppings Lane End, they were even coming in at half time. City won 4-2 and it's probably my favourite away day, as it confirmed to me we were ready for another promotion push. Worst. Any of the Huddersfield matches at the McAlpine/ Galpharm. We played like a bunch of clowns, both times, and they ripped us apart.
during the days of power strikes back in the early 70's, i twagged off school the afternoon hull city played liverpool in a league cup match(as it was called back then) on a cold n crisp november afternoon. boothferry park could not get in a generator so it had to be played in daylight. game finished 0-0 and we lost the replay at anfield 3-1. this match sticks out as i got detention for missing lessons and the head knew of the replay date and that will go down as my worst ever ""away match"" experience. jeez, i think we could all end up writing books on away days down the years. oxford away was also a fun trip in the days of big jim smith and the manor ground.
WEMBLEY MAY 2008 Arsenal 2008 Tottenham 2008 Man Utd 2008 Liverpool 2008 without question the best 5.
Millwall away last season was my sons first away game at 20 years of age, first visit to the UK and I take him to see city play at the new den. Talk about a baptism of fire, they were chucking bottles of pee at us on the way out over the fence ha ha ha. Well at least he had a good story to tell his friends when he got back to uni last summer
2nd half @ man utd was on a level i thought i would never see from any hull city side to be honest with you. but yes west brom away was also a goodie. it made john murray (five live commentator) wax lyrical about city.
I love it whenever I watch the highlights back, after McShanes OG and the commentator says "Are the floodgates starting to open now". Yes they were, in Arsenals goal!
Remember going to Southend away a few years back and seeing a sign that said "WARNING: Asbestos in roof" or somethign along those lines. I also remember going to Shrewsbury and finding not a toilet, but just a wall to piss on, which then ran down a gutter into the river. Lovely stuff.
I have 3 top away games which i will always look back on fondly - Sheffield Wednesday in 2004 (won 4-2), Man United away in 2008 and West Brom away in the same year during the promotion season. I was struggling to speak after them i'd been cheering so much! 3 worst away days, Walsall in 2005 (lost 3-0 the week after we were promoted nad looked like we'd been enjoying the partying too much!), Middlesborough in 2009 (****ing Marlon King!) and Huddersfield in 2004. Last away trip = Sheff United last season Next away trip = fingers crossed Forest!
my 1st ever away game on coach and without adult supervision was cambridge away when i was 15, it was a tuesday night..and just rememebr my dads face trying not too laugh as i told my dear mother cambridge was just past lincoln, and i wouldnt need to leave school early and id probably be home for midnight, fresh for the next day... had to leg it from school at dinner time, couldnt believe our luck when simon gray turned up in town, with a luxury coach, 5 times better then his usual tin sheds.. despite getting there at 6.30, it took the driver till 8 to find the ground,we lost 2-0, then i got back home about 2am with some explaining to do
Most Complicated Away Trip Ipswich Town Away - last fixture proper of 2008! May Day weekend - booked for a Caravan trip to Harrogate on the mistaken belief that there would be nothing to play for by the time we got to this stage of the season. Timetable as follows: Friday PM - Drive with husband and Caravan in tow to Harrogate (Got lost and had to do a three point turn with caravan on the back but that's another story!) Saturday daytime with friends. Tea time train back to Hull - stayed with Tiger buddy Sunday Morning - Tiger Travel to Ipswich. Attend game. Tiger Travel back to Hull. Persuade Eddie Brown coach driver (they were based in Boroughbridge) to take me back as far as their depot to be picked up by husband. They actually dropped me within 50 yards of the caravan site in Harrogate. Monday - Tow caravan back home! Best Away Game Has to be Arsenal - glorious colour photo of the scoreboard at The Emirates showing the score against a background of the night sky adorns my wall at work. Worst game Huddersfield Away (why is it always them!) sometime in the 80's. Lost 5-0. Micky Horswill passed us on the way out and said it would get worse before it got better - it sure did!!!!!!!
I had to respond for the sole reason you said you 'catched' what he said. Anyway, I have no real stories, but as this has turned into another 'favourites' thread I'll add mine: Leicester (2-0), Watford (4-1 in Play-Offs), Arsenal (2-1), Spurs (1-0), Newcastle (2-1), West Brom (3-0), Sheffield United (3-2) and Scunthorpe (5-1).
I went to watch the Tigers at the old Den in the late 80s. I was still only a nipper at the time and I have to say I was intimidated. At that time, Millwall fans had an even worse reputation than they have now. I'd had a revealing conversation a few weeks before out of Euston station with a Millwall thug who was tooled up on the way to Manchester for a game. During the match, Tony Norman dropped the ball into his own net and we lost 1-0. I was particularly grateful to him as I thought I might now get out of the ground alive. We were, of course, kept in the Den for a good half hour after the game before being escorted by the police to New Cross tube station. We marched in silence; everyone was too busy nervously looking over their shoulders to chat about the game. Then, as we approached a particularly dimly lit terraced street, the police seemed to disappear and meet us at the other end; apparently even they were too fightened to go down this particular street! Thanks goodness these were the "good" old days and Millwall fans are now charming, well behaved supporters of their club!
Brentford away when we were bottom of the league. Won two nil. Alcide and Williams . " We are ninety first, said we are ninety first" . Or winning at cheltenham with a big Kev goal and my well educated, sensible mate booting in Nick Buchannons headlight in the car park afterwards
Bradford away in the cup in 89 was pretty decent. Best away was the 4-2 at Hillsboough. Forget the Premier League experience as this was the moment that many of the tiger nation knew we were on a trip.
Agreed top night. Is there a dvd of it? Other than the season highlights one. Don't like the crap dance tune they've put over it.
