Being intrigued to find out who had the lowest capacity, I found the following, which seems to suggest the commentator was in error when he said one of three clubs had higher capacity than the KC stadium. It looks like there are 4 : Sunlan, MKD, Ipswich & Charlton. Wimbledon (old money) moved out there as they couldn't get enough interest from investors to expand/build a larger stadium close to the original. Of course, the numbers may be inaccurate ? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2020–21_EFL_League_One
Yes, wrote that earlier. When they licensed football stadiums in the 1970s Charlton had the largest capacity 70,000 ÷. This was not overtaken until they extended Old Trafford decades later. It is possible the last 70,000 crowd was at a game at the Valley. Certainly the last time a 70,000+ crowd was in a league ground until Old Trafford exceeded it was for a Who concert. Ironically they were managed at the time by Kit Curbishley, brother of future manager Alan Curbishley. Charlton are one of only 14 clubs to average over 40,000,for a season.
Oxford's should be in there, as you must be able to get thousands in that car park end. All right drive, what's your name then? https://www.google.com/maps/place/Kassam Stadium/@51.7166603,-1.2079541,235m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0x53389084f87feccf!8m2!3d51.7164888!4d-1.2078611
When they won the FA cup in the late 40's they played in front of almost 100,000 at Wembley. A popular team way back when. I certainly remember the names Sam Bartram & Eddie Firmani playing for them.
You might have moved by then but their goalie Charlie Wright was a character who alway got a great reception from Bunkers.
Am I reading this wrong... does that ****ing idiot think they won ???? It’s late and my eyes are losing a bit of lamp oil in my old age so I could be wrong ...
Must have seen him as I didn't leave Hull for Leeds until mid '65, the year they built the new S. stand. Saw quite a few at B.P. between mid 50's and late 60's, but don't recall his name.
Always got a great reception and played up to the crowd. Will have been in goal in our Cup run in 1970/1971 under Terry Neill.
It’s amazing how lucky we are, always score a sloppy goal or three, apparently very street wise and sit back and defend something we have... What is wrong with the managers and players from other clubs in this league, are they all on some kind of drug. After every game now all we can expect is the same dross coming from the opposition. Moan, moan, ****ing moan, it’s getting very boring, just for **** sake accept you were beaten by the better team and ****ing jog on... Late night rant over....
No I wrote the bottom bit. They seemed to think we weren't very good, which from their point of view I can kind of see because we didn't have much of the ball. But we were defensively resolute and limited them to a couple of chances in their own ground.
Last 2 managers who base their philosophy around possession football aren't gonna take kindly to being **** housed the way we did. Won the battles in both boxes, last them have it in midfield where they didn't threaten and hit the front quickly. If they admit that they loose their squad. Simple. Besides. No aspirational manager is going to accept we caned them and we're fundamentally the better side this early into the season. Still barely more than 1/4 way in. Looking positive but but you don't win anything til the spring.
Drive in football stadiums. It's the future. Like those Reliant Robins that lined the Boulevard back in the day. I always said the egg chasers were way before their time
To be fair, it's a comment we've heard after almost every game this season. I think there are still major improvements to be made in the team, especially attacking-wise.
Our goal difference looks healthy too. Especially after the Fleetwood score. +14 gd 24-10. Next best Portsmouth on +12
The next eight league games, taking us into the first week of the New Year, will prove whether or not we have the mettle to maintain a promotion effort Doncaster Rovers (h) Oxford United (a) Shrewsbury Town (h) Blackpool (a) Portsmouth (h) Sunderland (a) Lincoln City (h) Charlton Athletic (h)
Met Eddie Firmani in LA at the World Cup in 1994, he ran a coaching session for kids and my eleven year old son participated. We also met Charlie Cook.
Quite a statement that win whatever Lambert & Mill's said, they are just looking for excuses, but deep down they know we did a job on them. I must say I was a bit concerned that they would have been a bit leggy for this one, after the weekends game and all the travelling, but none of it, credit to Terry and his staff for getting the tactics and the players right on the night. Smallwood and particularly Honeyman are doing a great job in mid-field, Smallwood is the type of player we missed last season. Emmanuel is a revelation, and Coyle must be really pissed off not being able to get into the side. But great credit to Emmanuel he took his chance and is not letting go of that shirt. Burke and Greaves have really come together as a great partnership, Jordy has really "peed on his chips" as my old boss used to say. It looks as if he will struggle to get back into the side as I feel Jones and Mcloughlin are ahead of him. Jordy, temperament wise reminds me a bit of Hector who is now at Fulham, both when their confidence gets a knock just lose it. Both look good players when their confidence is high, but once it goes then they look awful. Good to see Eaves get his goal and both Wilk's and Magennis on the score sheet again. Finally, I have to say Terry is starting to win me over, clearly, he knows this league and his tactics have been spot on most of the time. I guess the question is, what did he learn last season, and subject to us getting promoted, can he now adapt to managing in the Championship. Whether we like it or not, if he gets promoted, then he will be given that chance, so I think we need to get behind him now.
I think people let the second half of the season last year dominate over the first half, where we played some terrific football. Yes Bowen and Grosicki were a big part of that, but a large part was down to McCann's tactics too. The fact our two best players plus Lichaj and Irvine left and we signed half a dozen new players to cover them meant it was a massive struggle for the team to adjust (although I grant the shut down should have given us that time to adjust), I'm still skeptical of Grant as much as many, and the jury's still out, but he did show glimpses last season.
