That’s rough mate. Worth getting all the options and all the potential consequences spelled out. Are you allowed to take anyone in with you when you meet the consultant? It’s useful to have a second pair of alert and calm ears in those situations. My mum was told that she had a 15% chance of dying from a heart condition, and was on the verge of declining the very major surgery to fix it when I pointed out that was annualised, and the laws of compound interest would mean she would be dead perhaps tomorrow and definitely within 3 years. The consultant said ‘yes, perhaps I should explain it like that in future’.....

I work on oncology products all the time. One thing I know is that surgery is a really effective treatment. The idea of a colostomy bag isn’t a bundle of laughs, but I know a couple of people who have them, and I would never have known had they not told me. Try and have a chat with someone who needs one before making a definitive decision. Mind you, if they found nothing with the scan a thorough check up every six months and a decision if it returns would seem worth suggesting.

 

My wife was at the first meeting and will come along again next week. Steelsy's missus is on the case too!

What I need to understand is, why at the initial consultation surgery was put forward as very much belt and braces (my words), but that I could go for it if I wanted extra certainty, yet they now recommend it. They told me that if I don't have the surgery I could have regular scans, so that very much seems the preferred option to me right now.

 

Stroller... knowledge is everything...ask everything, every little thing...and go away and talk about it...

As you say ask why their advice has changed...and challenge them.
As Stan says, surgery can be the answer, but make sure you know what is happening. Hope it sorts itself out.

Sorry to hear this Stroller, hope they fix you up. Seems there are a few on here giving you good advice. I don't know if it's because we divide our time in 2 different homes in 2 different countries, but neither of us have been called in for any colon scan, and I think I'm older than you. Sounds like you are getting better premeditative care in the UK, though for me not having so many tests to worry about the results of, has some dubious advantages.

 

As others have said Stroller, support and multiple advice from those around you will help you make the best decision.

The wimmin in the back don't seem very happy

 

Genuine question.

My young nephew became unwell last weekend and was advised to be tested for sars cov 2. He tested negative and following a phone consultation with a gp, was diagnosed with probable RSV, another respiratory virus.

So what is the point of being tested for a particular virus, if the only advice, following a positive sars cov 2 test is to isolate for a period of time? The same advice applies, surely, if a different diagnosis is given.

I understand the purpose of testing someone who needs treatment, but if none is required, what is gained by disproving one particular pathogen?

 

Covid19 is very contagious and kills let's say 2-5% of those infected....and and between 5-10% need hospital treatment
RSV is less contagious, and if I remember right, is paradoxically only endangers to the very young.

We should all "isolate" when we have a cold...or anything else such RSV, but we don't because either they don't produce serious disease or are not too contagious...and even if infected the hospital system is not affected.

You get a cold, advice is stay at home, a cold and RSV in the young is mostly self limiting

 

2-5%? I keep hearing the 99.6% survival rate, less than 0.5%.

Is covid really way more infectious than other respiratory viruses or influenza strains? I know of numerous people now that have tested positive but others close to them do not, whereas, in the past, when someone in the house gets a cold or flu or something, pretty much everyone else in the household also goes down with it.

 

The problem with everything you and I, (we) are talking about is based on the difference between people who are showing symptoms and then dying compared to positive asymptomatic people compared to those who die..

We seem to think 50% possibly even more are essentially asymptomatic


I believe mine is based on those who die after having a disease that is Covid19 and a positive test. Yours people who die compared to those with a positive test.

We have discussed false positive and real assymtomatic Covid patients as nauseum

And the same applies to the infection rate.

Flu is a lot harder to catch than a Coronavirus common cold..which is all Covid19 is after all..

Personally if I had flu I would totally self isolate
If my granddaughter had RSV ..I would self isolate her and me together

 

So are we all having the family round at Christmas?

 

Still hoping for a last minute change in the rules but it’s looking that way.

We won't be visiting out family - too many vulnerable members to put them at risk.

January will not be a good time for the NHS, and it'll be the public that get the blame for not acting responsibly, even though the governments have all thrown their hands up in the air and basically said do what the **** you want for 5 days

 

Trouble is Steels, we all know most people would ignore any form of stringent rules anyway and continue to have family around for Christmas.
It’s definitely a no-win situation all-round.

 

Sorry to hear about this Strolls........it's easy to say stay positive and all that but these consultants/specialists aren't in these roles to tick boxes, they do usually do what's right for their patients. It will be a worrying time but you are no doubt in Good Hands.....
