There was a lot of ex Sunderland players and back room staff at the do last night, Steve Bruce (of course), Eric black, the fitness guy and a couple of players from the 1973 cup winning team (none of which I can remember!)

The follow is as much I can remember after drinking a lot – I found out half way through the night that the drinks where getting picked up by the company!! So I went *slightly* overboard!

    First things first,

Steve Bruce has gone right up in my book. What a top bloke.

After the food, there was an auction, steve bid on a few items to get people going, however what really impressed me was there was one item (a 2009-2010 signed shirt) with all the money going to a solider who was injured, no-one was bidding on the item (its hard times and the starting bid was £400). In the end steve bid on it and was actually bidding against him self to get the price up, think he paid £700 for it. Not a lot of money for the man but considering he could have just taken a shirt into work and got the lads to sign it for free.

Following this Steve was invited on stage.

    First question –

What song where you going to play after the mags game?
With this been the question I wasn’t expecting him to answer it… but too his credit he answered every question put too him.

The answer is: Who let the dogs out. … Bit of a let down, but he went on to explain why, saying something along the lines of “Newcastle are like dogs aint they?”

When asked how dervestated he was to miss out on Kuqi he answered while laughing:
He said he was offered Kuqi, but respectfully declined 3 days before Newcastle signed him.

When asked who gets the most club fines, he said he liked to fine K. Jones… for been late into the box; lazy, slow etc which I thought was rather funny.
But he also said that all the lads get fined for all sorts, £20 for been on your phone, £20 for wearing a cap, etc etc… he said now the lads just go up to Eric (Black) and say “ I’ve been caught Monday, Tuesday, Friday and Saturday – thats £80 - heres £100 and it keeps me in £20 credit”. I thought it was bloody hilarious

He was asked how he thought the team would cope without Darren bent…

he answered by first saying there wasn’t something quite right with the lad, 26 goals in his first season, just got back into the England team, yet in the summer he wanted to go to turkey and they had to fight hard to keep him here (by the sounds of it, he was going to leave in the summer anyway) and he thinks it was all about money.

He then went on to say that Gyan has scored 11 goals so far this season, then started laughing and said, and none of those where pens or tap-ins! (Which got a right laugh).

He was also asked a rather strange question – who spends longest in the shower, only it was read out who is the longest in the shower.

After several false starts (laughing so much) he told a story about bramble…

He said each player must do a urine test before training to ensure they aren’t dehydrated etc. he said one day he went down as bramble was just finishing up. He said he walked in and his jaw almost hit the floor… he said he thinks he feds it. haha

There was a couple of stories about his Man U days, but I was rather drunk by this point and can’t remember a lot!

One story was of Cantnar (spelling?) it was after the kung-fu kick he did on the fan, when he was coming back to football, he gave an interview in which he said something about seagulls – seagulls follow the trawler men and expect fish (something like that), after which he got up and walked out.

Of course the head lines the next day was Erics gone mad etc.

Steve said for weeks no one would ask him why he said it, but one day (steve was feeling brave) he asked him wtf he was on about and where he got the story from, for which his reply was (in a French accent) “I dunno but it was ****ing good, no?!” again this got a right laugh.

He spoke briefly about the 5-1 defeat.

He said he can understand how hurt the fans where, he attempted to pick the players up afterwards, but someone had to pick him up first… he said it would follow him for the rest of his life and he can understand that some fans will never forgive him for that. The room fell silent. Then he sat up slightly and said, well we’ll do it to them next time in which the room just erupted with “Steve Bruce – Red and white army”.

The way, in which Steve spoke, it was almost as if he doesn’t care for Newcastle at all any more. Even his MOTHER has turned to the red and white army! Apparently in his words “she thinks she’s the queen of Sunderland”.

All credit to Steve, was a good night and he answered everything that was put to him with some more inside knowledge than I expected to hear.

    EDIT:

also i forgot - he asked if DB would be the next best thing for england (as said in the paper) he said no chance!

    You Glutton.

Great read & many thanks, like many i wished i was there. The Cantona thing was " ze Seagulls follow ze trawler, as they think sardine's will be thrown to the sea, Thank You "

I would have bet good money that Bramble was " The Longest " in the shower as well

Yes he does. Beyond boring. He just has to spoil threads so that he gets attention.

There's nothing genuine about your response big_chris, it's yet another attempt at spoiling what is a very good thread by a genuine Sunderland Supporter (JIMCSAFC) lets not go down this road eh? keep it real and keep it sensible.

The biggest revelation on this topic is
    BIG CHRIS has a mate.
Now hands up who saw that one coming, Ladbrokes would have been 10/1 on him having any mates.

    Is he your special friend.<smooch><smooch>
