IFAB votes for VAR at the World Cup, and an extra substitution available to teams during extra-time... VAR: Video assistant referees set to be used at 2018 World Cup in Russia - BBC Sport http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/43269186 So no ghost Lampard goals this year?
BUMP! Does anyone know when goal line technology evolved into VAR? I thought we were calling for goal line tech as per Steel's point re Lampard's goal, our against Bolton and various others including that weird one when the ball never was in the net - can't recall which team. Goal line tech seems simple, reliable and accurate but when did it evolve into VAR? I thought I'd be a big fan of VAR but I am not. I think I might be of goal line tech.
I guess it changed because the technology is now being used to help assist the ref's decisions across the whole field, with any incidents that occur...not just to clarify if the ball crossed the line or not.
I think the problem is that VAR is superseding the on-field referee. Of course goal-line technology is good (as long as they remember to turn it on), but do we really want people in a booth overruling the ref on the field? As regards offside decisions, the law says that level is onside, so the VAR people should alert the ref to a suspect play and show him the pictures - without lines being drawn. Is it level or not? No toenail or nostril hair decisions.
