The man has returned to a senior post in a football team to assist Jamie Pitman with the day to day running of the team. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/15167697.stm What do the Shrews and Hereford fans think of this? I quite liked him and he signed Shrewsbury some cracking players, admittedly Hereford's Ben Smith might disagree with that.
they certainly need all the help they can get and he is vastly experienced with a maxed out C.V, i think he will make a big impact
The carrot crunchers should have done this a year ago. Made Shrewsbury quite substantial amounts of cash in the transfer market up to last Summer (Langmead), two and a half years after he left. Simpson's legacy is SCS and a one off Holt transfer. To off set that he let Pugh, Ryan, Symes etc go for nothing and Tierney for a fee-all Peters signings with a value potential greater than was materialised. With better contract foresight we would have made money out of Davies and Humphrey, also signed by Peters. He gave Hart and Edwards their first regular league appearances. My only worry is that Hereford will be quite capable of beating us in the return fixture.
i am delighted for both gary and the bulls. anything he can do to pull utd out of the mire will keep several clubs above them on their toes, including the bantams and right up to the gas!. best of luck gary peters and the bulls
We couldn't have stopped Humphries leaving as he went to scotland and no bosman is applicable. Peters signed some cracking footy, just a bit 'sensible' in how he wanted the team to play. Simpson made a huge mistake in sweeping out those five 'easier to release' players as listed by KDS (you forgot Constable and Scot Bevan in there btw!!)
Both were before my time (I actually only pledged my allegiance start of last season- post Rotherham at home, I was hooked!) but I hope this doesn't ruin the good feelings between Peters and the faithful. Yes,it's off Wiki. Being honest Hereford need someone willing to put an end to the piss taking. You don't sell 17-goal-in-a-crap-team-proven-hitman Fleetwood to Luton a division below without having some serious problems.
And btw i'm told(although again I can't sound knowledgeable) that Constable failed to shine during his time here anyway? Either way egg's on Simmo's face now.
Constable played some great footy. Only started 7 games and 7 subs, but remember that Simpson was brought in during the last part of his season before he was loaned out to Oxford. Simmo signed Holt that summer, but Constable scored 24 goals in 44 games for Oxford and at no point did Simmo (or the club) contact him, which annoyed him greatly. I think with Holt and Constable in our squad we might not have remained in L2. If we had got promoted to L1 then Holt would have possibly stayed on, along with Davis and a few others. Manfeelings, didn't know you were such a recent fan of the club. Hope you have enjoyed the games (no matter how painful) so far.
Last I heard, he had got the job at Stockport, just as he sold his house in Shrewsbury (a few months into the new job) bought one in Stockport and they sacked him. Bit of a bummer really, but he slated the fans here and at stockport so don't feel too sorry for him. Only plus point I can think of is that he said hello to me in the foyer at STFC when I was with my wife arranging our wedding do at the function room at STFC a couple of years back! Highly recommend it as a function room, great service and food.
Hindsight distorts the view. Peters wasn't as good as some remember and Simpson wasn't as bad. I'd rate them and their teams similarly. Peters' teams often played some terrible hoofball stuff, but that was at Gay Meadow so there was an excuse. The style was generally better following the move. Simpson's teams played great football at times (the Gillingham 7-0 of course) but nowhere near consistently enough. It's misleading to think Peters signed or produced a host of good or valuable players. As I recall, Edwards and Hart were already in the youth system and only a fool would have overlooked their quality. Apart from those two, who else came through the ranks under Peters? Steve Leslie. That's all? There were plenty of underwhelming signings - Denny, Hogg, Nicholson, Sheron, plus the glut of last ditch panic signings when the team was disintegrating (Madjo, Briggs etc). Langmead was signed as a forward (and was no good) but was successfully converted to defence - though I don't recall us getting a fee for him did we, thought he was out of contract? Drummond, Herd and Davies were excellent signings on the other hand. Anyway, it's all in the past and hindsight plays tricks. I just don't see the Peters' time as some lost golden era or Simpson's time as a disaster - there were triumphs and disappointments in both. Glad to see Peters back though and wish Simpson well too. Can't believe these are both before the time of one of our regular posters though! I thought I was a new fan having been assimilated into Town supporting during the Conference season!
Blimey, I only properly started supporting the shrews a couple of years before the Conference year. Regarding Peters/Simmo I would agree that both had their good times, everyone seemed elated when we signed Simmo as towards the end of peters reign it wasn't great. Peters stuck to a 442 formation and Simmo seemed to change it every week.
The big difference between Peters and Simpson was that the former left the club with more valuable assets than the latter when both departed. (We got a fee for Langmead as he was still under contract. My point about Humphrey was that he should have been tied to a new contract earlier in the season as should Davies. We seem to have partially learned that lesson with Bradshaw). Every manager makes some duff signings including SAF at considerably greater expense. They both played similar styles of football but the groundwork for Simpson had already been laid by Peters. Don't forget that but for really cruel luck with injuries Peters could have got us promoted in 2007 (even allowing for his omission of Edwards but I always would maintain that in this case it took two to tango). With the money made available to Simpson he had little excuse for not gaining promotion (The cash for Holt and high wage earners like Coughlan, Jackson and Murray). He never appeared to be able to motivate his teams which was a criticism you could not level at Peters. With little hope, Peters almost saved Exeter from relegation to the Conference but achieved this primary goal at Shrewsbury. I am certain he will do the same for Hereford
not forgetting simmo's expensive loan from carrow road, who did nothing for shrews, went on to exeter and scored goal after goal, jamie cureton. the main criticism i have about simmo, was that he was a one man band. with the right deputy he would have been possibly a success
Kasule - are you sure about Langmead? Could have sworn his contract was up. What was the cruel luck with injuries that denied us promotion under Peters? Not disagreeing, just don't remember it. I agreed with the Edwards omission from the Wembley team but, with hindsight, it was a mistake. He was our best player and of course he was going to leave to better himself. Peters should have swallowed his pride on that one. Of course, Simpson always denied that his team was a high budget one and it was certainly clear in his last season that the financial reins had been pulled in dramatically. He wasn't successful ultimately and I wouldn't argue that he was a great manager for us, but nothing like as bad as some fans would say. Holt was one of his main successes of course but I wonder whether he was as good for us as we thought. Yes he scored a lot of goals, which clinches the argument for many and maybe they're right. But I can't help thinking he used us primarily to rebuild his career after his failure at Forest. Fair enough and it certainly worked for him if he did. But that interpretation would fit with his frequent "one man team" approach, that generally did us no favours. I recall at the time some thought he played as though his team mates weren't good enough but it seems to me that would also have suited any personal agenda he might have had. Ultimately, I recall his season with frustration - that he didn't score even more (missed so many sitters and every one-on-one I ever saw him have), that he seemed to play too much for himself and that he rarely played well in the key games (Bury and especially Gillingham in the play offs). I wonder what his team mates' honest opinions were? I've gone off at a tangent here but I think of these things when I'm walking the dog!
Langmead was still under contract and about to go into the second year of a deal he signed under Simpson. GT said he did not want to keep an unsettled player. He followed Hibbert to Peterborough after the latter declined a new contract. Injuries. Davies injured with the last kick of the match in the Semi v MK Dons. This meant a readjustment in shape of the team for the final with Asamoah replacing Davies-hardly like for like. Then we had an injury to Luke Jones in the Wembley warm up (And he had played exceptionally well in the previous few games). This necessitated Ben Herd coming in who had been injured and hardly kicked a ball in the previous weeks. In an unofficial quote Simpson was heard to say that Holt was the most difficult player he ever had to manage because he would not follow instructions.
I haven't been able to get enough of all things Salopian since last year, when I annuled my pointless gloryhunting at Arsenal and did the honourable thing(i obviously live in Wpool but was born in the Royal Shrewsbury!) It's been fascinating learning about all the recent trials and tribulations, and it's certainly never dull.
manfeelings, you are entitled to the title, proud salopian, as you were born in the isthmus of the river severn.
