If it's not an internal appointment, I doubt whether it will be any of the people mentioned so far.

Lots of names mentioned (some as jokes from myself) but I can only see 3 names that have been mentioned as a 1st choice pick.

    Graham Alexander (Bluebaldee)
Paul Hurst (old timer and CJS)
    Sol Campbell (years ago)

What is everyone else's 1st choice?

Sol Campbell for me. I'm sure he would do a great job.

More info from Bristol Live https://www.bristolpost.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/state-play-bristol-rovers-begin-4703038

Bristol Rovers do not have a successor lined up to replace Ben Garner, Bristol Live understands, with the club set to welcome applications in the coming days.

Garner was sacked shortly after the 4-1 defeat to Fleetwood Town on Saturday with Rovers 18th in League One with just three wins from 11 games. Focus quickly turned on Saturday evening to who Rovers will select to succeed him.

The early bookmakers’ favourite for the job is head of recruitment Tommy Widdrington, who is set to be in caretaker charge for Wednesday’s EFL Trophy tie with Chelsea U21s and is priced as odds-on chance.

But the club do not intend to consider him as a candidate, nor does the 49-year-old crave the job full time. Instead, Rovers plan to conduct an application process over the next couple of weeks before narrowing down contenders and holding interviews. Widdrington, CEO Martyn Starnes and of course owner Wael Al-Qadi will oversee that process. Starnes is expected to discuss the situation with the press this week.

Some fans suspected an immediate successor was waiting in the wings given the swift swing of the axe that ended Garner’s reign within 90 minutes of full time on Saturday. That is not the case and the club is open-minded on options to replace Garner.

His coaching staff of Jack Mesure, Kevin Maher and David Coles remain employed by the club and they are expected to stay unless they wish to depart.

The club is believed to be eager to ensure its new manager coalesces with the existing framework and strategy to make the club more sustainable by developing talent from within.

There will also be an expectation to deliver an attacking, entertaining style of football that Garner promised but ultimately failed to deliver.

Garner’s game management is understood to have been a particular concern for decision-makers at Rovers, with like-for-like substitutions and naive passages of play in recent weeks testing their patience before the Fleetwood debacle proved to be the final straw.

There was no revolt from within the dressing room, but the board had seen enough and believe a different voice is required to get the best out of this overhauled squad.

But Rovers will not panic and rip up the template to start from scratch. They have faith in their strategy and the players recruited.

And, while remaining open-minded on possible successors, a more proven manager is the preference.

Key points from the article above....

    • We don't have anyone lined up yet.
    • Widdrington is not in the running for the job and doesn't want the job.
    • Starnes will at some point this week update the fans further.
    • The new manager will have to stick with the clubs new philosophy of youth/sustainability with attacking/entertaining football.
    • A proven manager is the preference.

He's done some really difficult jobs pretty well, and I just think he'll be a good manager if he's given a run with a decent club.

WDP suggested we went for the Cheltenham manager, Cheltenham's style of play is close to the style BG was trying to get Rovers playing but more successful.
The Newport manager was also mentioned if Rovers were prepared to pay compensation to either Cheltenham or Newport.

    DON'T want Appleton

He's one of the favourites for the Derby job, so that doesn't seem likely.

Exeter played a good style of football and developed some good players like Ollie Watkins, so he would probably be a decent fit for us.

Yes, Tisdale is the bookies overwhelming favourite.

Not sure. His Exeter team was decent in L2 but he didn’t exactly set L1 alight with them and Franchise FC.

On balance, worth a go imho - he’s local too, living in Bath.

I think we have some half decent players here at the club, He brought on Ollie Watkins now at Aston Villa and Ethan Ampadu who is now at Sheffield Utd on loan from Chelsea and also in the Welsh national squad. Maybe he is the type of manager we need, only time will tell but I believe we need to make sure the next one is the right one
