    O’Nien but not by much.

Leadbitter was good again and Scowen had his best match so far. Bailey Wright was steady and Gooch made a difference.

    Roker Report - Player Ratings:
    Lee Burge: 6/10
Was beaten by a powerful strike, even if his parry and positioning could have been better. Burge had little to do outside of that, making his failure to make a great save all the more frustrating.
    Conor McLaughlin: 5/10
Defended well on the whole, but found himself caught out for Jack Lankester’s goal. His passing was a real problem, McLaughlin either seemed to want too long in possession or chose the wrong option going for the hollywood pass rather than trying to build out from the back.
    Bailey Wright: 6/10
Swept up well for the most part, but was three-yards out of position for Ipswich’s goal.
    Tom Flanagan: 5/10
Flanagan was dominant in the air at times, but on the whole got exposed in possession, just not a good enough technical footballer for a genuine promotion contender.
    Luke O’Nien: 5/10
Another substandard performance from O’Nien. His crossing was poor and his defending one-on-one remains a real issue.
    Grant Leadbitter: 7/10
Set the tone early, winning a handful of 50-50s, Leadbitter never really controlled the game and was caught ball watching in transition a few times, but scored a nerveless penalty to seal the points late on.
    Josh Scowen: 5/10
Sunderland’s most active player in the first half, it felt like Scowen saw more of the ball than anyone else, the problem was his inconsistency. The midfielder struggled to create any meaningful opportunities and missed another point blank chance carrying on his profligacy from Saturday.
    Lynden Gooch: 6/10
Did a good job of coming infield to create space for Denver Hume enabling the left wing back to be isolated one-on-one. Gooch’s positivity and creativity was best seen in his run and through ball to release Wyke for the opener.
    Denver Hume: 7/10
We’re reaching a point where there’s a level of real expectation that magic can happen when Hume picks up the ball. His ball-carrying and crossing continue to improve, he’s close to becoming an elite attacking weapon at this level.
    Chris Maguire: 6/10
Never really left his imprint on the game, his pressing was lethargic and half-hearted, plus he rarely threatened the Ipswich defence.
    Charlie Wyke: 7/10
Took his goal brilliantly showcasing an excellent first touch, before finishing decisively. His hold up play was effective, but Wyke never really troubled the Town defence again.
    (SUB) Max Power: 7/10
Showed great intent to play forwards and release Wyke and co every time he picked up the ball, added a much needed vertical element to our passing.
    (SUB) Danny Graham: 6/10
Another game where Graham is introduced with roughly 20-minutes to go and does very little to impact the game.
    (SUB) Dion Sanderson: n/a
Brought on to waste time and add height to the Sunderland backline in injury time.

Luckily Ipswich were just as bad as us and we had a bit of luck on our side. Could have easily been another Pompey.

so there you have it i don't agree as well, however most of the team are his picks not all,i also don't agree that Wyke is the answer and given the cash limitations we are stuck till the window opens in the meantime we have to change a few things round in training and try other avenues, Remember when Ross went through a **** patch then with injuries he was forced to try Maja success but only for half a season he was ****ed about by us so left and that's what's been happening with the academy since . if we don't give the young ones a chance they will go. now do you see where i'm coming from and when i've lost confidence in a player they have to earn it back he has not i'm afraid

Thought Scowen was all over the place in the first half and playing well and Wright had their supposed dangerman in his back pocket. I would agree with RR with Hume I suppose, he looked dangerous at times and put some decent crosses in

Scowen was all over the pitch and was a big miss when he was taken off. Leadbitter man of the match for me, Gooch was very good and Hume drove drown the left well again. Big Charlie would have had the MOTM honours but a couple of decent chances where he didn't work the keeper cost him that honour for me. He done great though, he took his goal well and held the ball up as and when required, he led the line well on his own.
We just need Maguire to start firing again as he is off the boil at the minute, he did work very hard though.

Nice finish from their lad, smashed it.

Deserved red card. Lunged in with two feet.

Soft as **** penalty. There was a similar one in the PL a few weeks back. The ball headed onto Dier's hand from behind iirc.

    Tremendous three points.

Yeah Bailey was a bit too deep imo and gave their lad a bit of room to pick his spot. I read someone saying it was Leadbitter's man who scored but that's not how I saw it at the time.

    We've lost one game ...

... every other team has lost more.

Ipswich, Lincoln, Hull and Portsmouth have lost three times as many with only a quarter of the season gone.

    That's good isn't it ....
