About 1980 Bobby Charlton opened a fete at my old school. Went along. He was very polite, responding to everybody but seemed somewhat shy and not enjoying being the centre of attention.
A young lad was stood nearby with a Man Utd shirt on. "Was he good, dad?" he asked. "Yes, he was good son". "Was he very good, dad". " Yes, son, he was very good". " Was he as good as Joe Jordan?". His father's face as he said " Yes, son, he was" as he shook his head and rolled his eyes was an absolute picture.

Sad news. Bobby is probably the best English born player of all time. I never saw Duncan Edwards, but understand he was special.
my top 5 in no order. Charlton, Matthews, Gazza, Robson, Moore.

Freddie Trueman was a very unpleasant man, I was in his company on several occasions and not someone I would like to spend any time with by choice.

I was at that game. I was at a boarding school at Hatch End, four stops from Wembley Central on the Bakerloo Line. Strangely allowed out and I think we paid at the turnstile (a few bob) to get in.

Tom Finney should be in there. Bill Shankly would have your guts for garters.

After the passing of Jack recently, this is another tragedy for the Charlton family. Some have said it already...Bobby was the best English player of all time.

His reading of a game was unrivalled, his positional sense and passing were legendary and the power he had when he drilled a ball goalwards,I've never seen a ball bit harder and with more precision!!! I wish him and all his family well in his battle....It's a tragedy for England, for Manchester Utd and for any Football fan that remembers his playing days...

    Be well Bobby!!!

Slightly off topic. But what are the chances of England getting the 2030 World cup? One hundred years after the 1st one. 64 years after 1966.

I’d be on the slim to zero scale with that one.

Fair comment. Might need a large brown paper bag.
Though I'd suggest that has the nation who invented the game it should be a forgone conclusion. But it won't!

Nah, Europe has had it enough times. They're desperate to win the European Song Contest, first.

Yeah, him and Harry Gregg had been the only ones left for a good few years until Gregg died in February.
