I was ready to say that scoreline was very flattering but in the end 4-3 was probably about right. Villa had a really good second half. I think the turning point was actually Bednarek's injury which just left us a bit unsettled while Stephens got himself into the game (which he did after a few minutes). But that gave them a bit of confidence and we never got back on top as we were in the first half. That first half was clinical - not a word often associated with Saints. McCarthy stole the MOTM award from JWP in the end. Let's just hope Bedders, Bertie and Ings are not seriously injured!!
Wow that was an amazing game. Southampton played well and were ruthless in the first half. Second half Villa really pressed and played well. Southampton defended well for much of the game but struggled at the end due to the enforced substitutions. Three great points but hopefully not at the cost of lots of injuries. Grealish is fabulous but not sure it was a penalty though credit to Smith's team for pushing all the way. Thought the referee was a bit poor with the challenge on Ward-Prowse from Cash and a few other decisions like Bednarek landing on his head and play not stopping.
We conceded 3 times with Vestegaard & Bednarek on the pitch a couple of weeks ago. That hasn't made them bad players. Your point?
Credit to villa for raising their game, after scoring their first. They grew from that and stopped us from controlling the ball for long periods. They will be disappointed not to get anything from the game, when they watch the replay and see McCarthy stopping shot after shot. But well done Saints. 3 valuable points.
2 were with JWP at LB, I personally think that had a bigger impact I think the biggest impact was we thought the game was done at 4-0 and the players lost their relentlessness they'd played with up to that point. I think they thought Villa would give in at that point, but they didn;t
I’m going to give Jack a break. He hasn’t played for a few weeks and came on cold, just as Villa went into nothing-to-lose mode. Even if he was at fault for one of the goals, he wasn’t alone out there. In other news, 13 points from 7 games, if extrapolated across the season, would give us 70 points, rounded down. Last year that would have earned 3rd place.
He also had an out of position JWP at left back for 2 goals. One of them was a penalty he had nothing to do with. Its ridiculous hes being blamed. We won. We should be (mostly) happy.
