Health outcomes shouldn't be down to the profit motive.

So, the detailed briefing only heard by Johnson, Sunak, Hancock and Gove was leaked to Peston, forcing Johnson’s hand over a lockdown to his fury and leading to the chaos of delayed press conferences (meant to happen on Monday) and the BBC really did say it wouldn’t move Strictly.

so who is the guilty party? Sunday Times reckons Hancock. Wouldn’t put it past Gove though.

No argument with that sentiment, but they are. Your personal health status is also of course closely related to your wealth.

I wouldn't begrudge any of the companies that profit from getting us out of this mess a penny and I'd guess it would be a mere drop compared to the cost of operating through the pandemic as it currently stands.

That's assuming they don't hold the world to ransom over treatments and vaccines but I guess the profits will be there without needing to.

Well I don’t have Beth’s expertise, but I would assume that an effective vaccine would reduce long COVID cases simply by reducing the number of people who get infected with COVID, which must be a necessary cause of the long version.

Sadly I can’t see how it would make any difference to people who have long COVID now though. I’d guess that if she were given a test your wife would be negative for the virus, yet she still has its legacy, the body’s own misdirected response to it.

Steel ...I will/wont answer this with a I don't know. But I think/ probably hope that it might just.
    My reason:-
If the vaccine changes Covid 19 from a deadly disease in some...to a common cold like event, it may therefore attenuate the symptoms in other people too. People like your wife, who for some reason we don't quite know, after the infection are left with longterm symptoms. If it was a milder infection initially it is fairly logical to think the long term effects may also lessen too.
I am afraid for those people now with long Covid19, I am not sure it will be any help. Sorry

Sadly the Pharma companies will point to massive R&D costs to justify their profit margins. We all pay for it in the end...

Steels, my wife doesn't have long-Covid (we don't think) but she has had very similar symptoms (as a post viral syndrome or something) and a lot of them match (ectopic beats especially bending over, climbing stairs, putting out washing etc, shortness of breath, rib pain, throat pain) and she's had chronic fatigue for years before this. We had trips to A and E, heart scans and all sorts of quack diagnoses throughout 2019 with nothing apparently wrong.

Assuming there is a cross over, one thing that does make a slight difference has seemed to be easy posture exercises - hands on head while standing upright when she is already on her feet and other simple, but not intense, stretches. Back massages too (I try to do this daily but we're not so good on managing our time).

It's not a miracle cure but even marginal benefits are something.

All the best to you and your wife.

Feels like we're right back to square one, apart from medics understanding the virus better.
A mainly incompetent government and a myriad of experts saying opposite things, not to mention all the experts on here.

    Who and what to believe?

I have no idea Col to be honest. I am not really sure anyone has.

There have been some serious mistakes made. My current bugbear is the Trace and Track system, but Germany in particular seem to have a good TandT system, but they are back in lockdown. Perhaps one day we will work out what South Korea and Japan have done so right.

I think I know what NZ has done right...shut their borders tight shut really early. I wish we had done that.

Now as said above we are lacking real leadership, leadership that is not based on rash descisions, leaked documents and cronyism

Thanks pal, we'll try some of those.

Some improvement this week, although still in a lot of pain. The symptoms seem to come and go, different ones affecting her at different times - it's really strange, which is making it harder for the medics to pin down exactly what is going on. Cardiology on Thursday, so hopefully either some answers or something else ticked off the list.
