Many, if not most, of the cases that 'slip through the net' simply don't! They've usually been reported by schools & that's when it becomes 'PC World' with the authorities.

Instead of the hoped-for reply of 'we'll get right on it', the reply is mostly 'S/he is on our list now', which translates as 'I might check this out once my holidays are over / once I get through my present ridiculous casework load / hoping one of our team will look at this etc. IF, and it's a big IF, they do something, it goes before a series of committee meetings.

So what are my sources? My sister in law was a Primary Head teacher. My wife & all her friends were teachers. Every one of them has fed & clothed children - often daily. Every single child who was vulnerable to a variety of situations was reported. None died, I'm glad to say, but that's largely because of these ladies. And it happens in almost every school. But the underlying trend is that no help whatsoever is provided for most of these children. Sadly.

Sad to hear that. I'm kind of involved in something like that. I won't go into details, but it involves my grandson, his school and his ****e of a mother. <grr>

This thread reminds me of a reason why I miss the championship. Too long a gap between games means all I have to pile through this crap.

I'm so sorry to hear that, Shaks.

I sympathise, particularly as we have an 11yo grandson in a situation. Fortunately he has good parents - & first class grandparents! :D We've always known something wasn't quite right, but with kids, so much goes through the schools re. getting the kids 'statemented' etc. (i.e. referring for diagnosis, setting up appropriate support etc.). Took us years, & the government finally provided additional money to the school for him. No idea what the school spent the money on, but it wasn't on his support! He was diagnosed as being Dyslexic, Dyspraxic (we had to look it up too), & being on the Autism spectrum. My son wouldn't allow me to go to the school as he knew I'd end up in jail. Probably for murder. That angry. For years.

The good news is that his parents found a primary school last year for his final 2 years in primary. They've been brilliant & have acted over & above anything we could have expected. All the support you could wish for, & there are a load of similarly 'statemented' kids at the same school.

Now the political bit. The introduction of 'Sats' & 'tables' is the root cause. There are many schools that will take in any kids (like his first), and there are much better one too (like his second). But there are also loads that have no interest whatsoever in receiving 'non-academic' children. Reason? It's those bloody league tables. Some head teachers believe that the ultimate mark of their success is to be as near to the top of these tables as possible. Multiple impediments are put in the way of non-academic kids getting into such schools, and creative actions adopted to get rid. Shocking. Their primary objective should be to educate every kid as best they can, not ignore them so they can climb the table.

Now before anyone expects me to have a go at private schools, let me tell you that they generally pursue academic excellence, with none of your table-climbing nonsense. They see every child as an opportunity to educate to the best of their abilities, giving these kids their best chance in life. Hats off to them, which I must admit that I never thought I'd say.

You don't though have to read it. If I'm not interested in a comment or subject, I don't read it or reply. <ok>
