I think a few of their fans feel like that but I don't think it is so much his positioning, just Man U are so cavalier. It was interesting after their mid week carnival that Ferguson made a big thing about defending and they were better yesterday. I think Jones will be used in a variety of positions once Rio and Vidic are both fit. He's is Rio's natural replacement. Smalling is a cracking player too but I think Jones is a better defender. Each to their own I suppose, they're both very good. With England I would have them backing up your main centre backs now. Personally I'd go Cahill and Jagielka because they are always fit and have never had a bad game between them. Admitedly I don't rate Terry that highly because I think he is rash and you have to have pace alongside. He is easy to draw out of the back 4 leaving holes as he does. And he is scum! I'd forget Ferdinand now, he is always injured and plays only 50% of the games. We need to start looking ahead. If Saylor could hold his form for a season I think he'll come into the England reckoning too.

Vermaelen is class. I'd sell him though to a more lightweight league. I don't think his body is up to the rigours of our game unfortunately. He is right up there when fit. Quick, strong, good reader, classy, can pass, scores goals and so on but won't play 30 games a season. As I say it may have cost them 30m to team Jagielka with Cahill but I think it would have been a commanding pair.

"What.....Coloccini and Taylor, are they good are they?...Let me have a look at the table,...Hmmmmm..Newcastle are above us and they have spent f*ck all.

That's it then, out with the cheque book, I know they'll sell them after the cracking job I did up there"

jags or Cahill would've slotted seamlessly into arsenals defence in my opinion. i'm not sure what their fans thought when they signed mertesacker but they must have been scratching their heads after having the money to sign jones (i.e. enough to buy cahill or jags) and then spending it on an older slower player that doesn't have PL exp.

I don't think it's a case of him not being noticed, it's more that he's on a big wage and would demand a large transfer fee to prise him away.

I think it's unfair to be judging Per at Arsenal just yet - it's his first season and first few games. I seem to recall Colo having a shocking opener with us and look at him now.

I very much doubt Pardew could have ever named Barton captain.

I'm not knocking him persay just commenting that there were more suitable replacements under wengers nose thart wouldn'nt have likely needed the time to bed in that Per needs.

Well it was actually two games and I would imagine that's quite an honour for any player to be named captain of Newcastle United.

The thread link was more to show your total ignorance to the things that happen at the club. You said that Pardew would never have named Barton captain but he actually did - I think that makes YOU the "simple ****er".

In fact I know it does. <cheers>...

The debate was about the Club captain not being the captain for 2 games. At no point did Pardew ever name Barton club captain.

This was the comment you made - I see no mention of the word 'club' in your text?

    Back-track? <ok>

Context...<laugh> You simply had no clue that Joey Barton had captained our club. That was why I produced the link.

Agree with you about Mertesacker. He needs time to get used to the pace, and the directness of the Premier League. I made the same mistake people are making about Per with Vidic, and Evra when they first came to the PL with United. I'll hold my hands up and say I though they were pretty gash. And it's safe to say I've been proved well and truly wrong. That's why I just stick to footy manager now!

Mertesacker is a top defender, but I'm not sure he's up to the pace of the Prem. Time will tell, maybe he'll be ok with the pace of Vermaelen next to him instead of donkeys like Koscielny, Djourou etc. None of them compare to Colo tho, what a guy. If I have to find one criticism, it is that he still tries a little too much at times, luckily he is good enough to get away with it but I'd rather he didn't take the risk!

I only remember against Villa to be honest, I don't remember the second game. I do know he had a shocking game against Villa. Also in that game, Nile Ranger started and was so bad. Don't try telling me what I know, because it's one hell of a lot more than you do.

Also I believe Barton captained us in his first ever game for us in a pre season friendly but i'm not 100% on that one.
