I don't know whether it was true or not, maybe our friends from over the pond can confirm, a work colleague once told me he was working in the East coast of USA & Canada and he started dating a girl there. One weekend they decided to go to the beach and start early, so he went at 5 am to collect his girlfriend. There was no sign of life in the house so he banged on the door, and his girlfriend father opened an upstairs window asking when was going on. My friend said "sorry to wake you but I was just knocking up your daughter". The guy came furious and chased him off telling him never to come back.
Apparently, that term means you have just ****ed his daughter over there.
