Was the linesman right?

  1. Well in my opinion, if the referees are uncertain, it's best not to allow the goal then to allow it, just like when they're not sure if a ball crossed the line, or if they're not sure about a pen decision....

Like our pen that should have been against Sunderland <grr>

I agree, benefit of the doubt to the defender. I was just pointing out that DDs pic isn't the conclusive proof you're trumpeting. Personally I've no idea if it was out or not from those shoddy camera angles. Why wasn't there a goal line shot? There's usually one to check if a goals in or not on tv afterwards.

Goal all day long for me but do I give two hoots? Do I heck. End of the day we were very fortunate all round on Saturday. We had one of those days where everything was in our favour. Whether it be penalty decisions, disallowed goals, or being outplayed, we were damn lucky. Pardew admitted it. But we take it because at some stage this season we'll be on the other side of it and we won't be very happy.

Was it, wasn't it? Check the Sunday papers, it's all there in Black and White.

Yeah well I copied and pasted the posts near the player and drew a few lines but it still seems hard to call. IMO at least half of the ball has crossed the line but hard to say if the other half has because of perspective and 2D of the picture. .. <laugh>

Looking at the replays on tv the general consensus is the linesman got it wrong, but as he can only call it as he sees it, he's done the right thing.
Even watching replays on tv gives a false impression, Jonas had a shot at goal early in the game that looked no more than two feet wide, the commentator said it was a least six feet. Unless there is official goal line technology, tv replays are not 100% accurate either.

Quite a good read on NUFC.com on the game. Here's part of it.
    ____________________________________________________

Man of the match was undoubtedly Tim Krul who pulled off some magnificent saves and he was ably assisted by Taylors Ryan and Steven who put in some staggering blocks to deny Wanderers.

Krul first denied Jamie O'Hara when the former Spurs man's free-kick looked to be curling inside the far post and then the Dutch stopper blocked Kevin Doyle with his head, despite being inside his area.

Gutierrez went close with a right-footed effort and then from Yohan Cabaye's corner, Ba had a simple near post header to convert past Wayne Hennessey to give United the lead on 17 minutes.

It was Ba's fourth goal in two games and as the away contingent sang, his form since Ramadan has been remarkable. He and we just can't get enough....

But a good half got even better when Sunday League clogger Karl "Kelvin" Henry gifted possession to Gutierrez and Spiderman strode into the area before dispatching the ball past Hennessey for his first of the season.

    Yes, wasn't it.

Couldn't have happened to a better guy. ( I use the term better, very loosely.)

LOL I thought the whole ball had to cross the line for it to be out? Yet you use a line representing the ball coming from the centre? Are you seriously using that to judge it? It's like tinkering data to make it more applicable to your statement.

Even your line representing the white line comes from it's centre.

Linesman is always right..........it's called human judgement. Teams always whinge when decisions go against them ( was King Kenny complaining about Rodwell being sent off........NOT LIKELY)

They very rarely show it when it's wrong IMO, maybe something to do with their contract lol

TBH though, if we do not have sufficient evidence and the angles are obscure for refference, then the best person to judge is actually the lines man. Given that his view point is our strongest evidence, then I think I will have to go with that.

By the way, maybe it would be better to put the verticle line at a 90 degree angle to the pitch line?

Why are we debating if it was over the line or not, I'm more concerned with the ****e defending that lead to this ever being a discussion.

Obertan just allowed the cross to come in making no effort was so ever to stop it. Ryan Taylor never learned from his mistake that lead to their first goal. He was caught ball watching and drifted too far inside and allowed the cross to go over his head. This allowed Jarvis to knock a free, unchallenged header back across the goal where there was a statu-esque Tim Krul. Coloccini was closest to Doyle when the knock back from Jarvis hit the turf but decided to run away behind Krul to protect the goal line rather than sticking a simple challenge in.

Then, in fairness to Krul, from that distance he was probably expecting a better contact from Doyle who's miss kick was fortunate to hit the post and rebound around Krul back into the path of Doyle, who, with all the time in the world poked it in when Coloccini had his back turned for most of these events! All 3 of Tiote, Lovenkrands and Gutierrez seemed happy to remain on the 6 yard line. If any of these three just continued running towards our goal they could easily cut out Doyle's second attempt at the very least!

The 'assistant referee' was 100% correct - after all, they never get decisions wrong! <whistle>...

<laugh> - yeah, but if we are not sure ourselves, then is it really fair to assume they are wrong?

Hmm, just shot myself in the foot 'cause I'm thinking yes <laugh>

Obertan the key one for me. He seemed a bit off the map on Saturday. Previously he has got back in and got tight straight away. On saturday he was getting back and then standing off allowing the crosses to come in. I watched Cabaye scream something at him in French. It didn't look to be pleasantries! His body language on Saturday was all wrong, even in possession. He seemed almost stroppy in the heat. Mind with a nappa like that its hardly surprising!!
