As he'll be in the final 6 months in January, he can sign a pre-contract agreement with any other foreign club, right? I'd imagine this would be the case. Either that, or we try to terminate his contract, which will be less costly in January than the Summer.
He might want to go out and play the second half of the season to increase his value. Depends on whether he intends to keep playing at the top level or just grab some cash and coast. I'm sure he's already got clubs in his ear, especially after being left out.
You might as well terminate now. He's no value to you and you're paying him the contract value anyway. I don't see the point of keeping to his contract.
Also depends on which country he wants to go to and who can afford his wages. He had offers from the Middle East (Qatar & Saudi) where he'd be earning the same amount as he's on at Arsenal, but he didn't want to go there. I don't know if that was a decision based on family circumstances or the destination not being preferable for him personally. Nonetheless, he's said recently the main two options he'd strongly consider after Arsenal are the USA or Turkey. Genuine question. And I know it might sound weird, but there's been a debate about it. Do you think he should be remembered as an Arsenal legend or not? Polls show that it's near enough 50-50 at the moment.
I wonder if it's a cash flow issue (if we do this, he wants the remainder of his contract paid up front allegedly) or if there's any additional fees incurred for early termination. Because these are the only two plausible explanations I can think of for not doing this yet.
Might depend on what he does next. If he ****s off to Chelsea and starts kissing the badge, then probably not!
By the standards of being a starter in the Germany team, and being at Real Madrid, Ozil has been a flop. Compared to the likes of Overmars / Petit / Viera / Henry, who drove you to PL titles and maintained the Goon place in the CL for years, Ozil has done SFA. Even the banter value is now pyrrhic regarding the summer of 2013 (Bale to Madrid from Spurs, Ozil from them to you) .
You say this, but Fabregas effectively did the same and quite a sizeable bunch consider him to be an Arsenal legend purely for how influential he was. He was one of the best midfielders I've ever seen play for us despite leaving at 24. Guy was unreal.
Fabregas joined Barcelona, though. Extremely understandable, especially given that's where you nicked him from in the first place. Not sure if you'd be as understanding if Ozil mopes about and then joins Chelsea on a free. I think the fanbase would probably be split on it.
I agree he hasn't fulfilled expectations when he arrived as being the best playmaker in Europe at the time. And I personally don't consider him to be a 'legend', but there are some factors that add credibility to the argument, even if I don't agree with them. Helped to end our trophy drought. Most decorated player of the Emirates era. 4 FA Cups in 7 years. The most assists of any Arsenal midfielder in history allegedly. And although money has unquestionably been a huge factor in him staying, if it's true that he had more lucrative offers elsewhere but chose to stay with us, then he stayed with us during the most difficult period we'd had in over 20 years, when others fled.
I mean, they're welcome to him, to be honest . Like I said. I don't consider him a club legend. However, him joining Chelsea wouldn't change the fact that he'd have made history with us. That and the fact Chelsea would be getting him at the back end of his career.
Never knew you’d warmed to Mourinho, PNP. If you have such belief in his man-management qualities, you are more than welcome to take him off our hands...
Mourinho's Mourinho. He'll get fantastic performances out of some players and alienate some others. Got the best out of Ozil by kicking him up the arse and telling him some home truths. I don't think that would work any more, as I don't think that he gives a **** now. Pass.
I'm sure Jose would welcome the opportunity, but sadly Spurs have a quota level of 'Madrid players coming to the end of their career' set to 1. And that quota is already filled by another player (who you may have heard of) ...
I don’t understand why this myth has been spread at alarming pace. He made the comments before Arteta was appointed. He then played in 11 of the 12 games under Arteta between when the Spaniard took over and when lockdown began, starting in nearly all of them. This may have contributed to the management’s frustrations with him, but it didn’t result in anything tangible, other than Chinese TV stations not playing Arsenal games for a week or so. But they carried on broadcasting Arsenal games after, they just didn’t mention his name in commentary. Given that Özil already had poor relations with the upper echelons of the club, the more rational reason is his poor relations, along with the refusal to take a wage cut during Covid when the other players did, is what contributed to him being ostracised. This decision is mainly financial more than anything else.
The thing is, they are undermining themselves because whilst they are 100% correct in that Arsenal’s stance has been hugely hypocritical, anyone who is capable of a basic google search can see that there isn’t a correlation between Özil making those comments and him being dropped from the squad entirely. As I showed above, he was still being selected and was a first team player well after those comments were made. The final year of his contract seems to be littered with all sorts of stipulations and clauses, such as the £8m loyalty bonus, on top of getting a £100k bonus for every match he features in. This, to me, is the more logical reason for why he’s been treated this way, on top of the obvious wage dilemma. They are right to be pointing out the double standards, but they’re conflating two issues which don’t really have much relevance in explaining Özil’s omission from the squad entirely.
