Yes. Both brilliant venues. Some great pubs in Kentish Town too showcasing up and coming indie bands back in the day. Marquee club on oxford st was another legendary spot.
One of the places I went to the most back in my yoot was a place called The Venue in New Cross. Saw loads of up and coming bands there. Lush, Neds atomic Dustbin. Inspiral carpets, Carter unstoppable sex machine, Verve (before they became The Verve) Not sure I’ve mentioned it before but I snogged a very drunk Miki Berenyi at that club. She tasted of Marlboro fags and Pernod
Clubs and Venues have been closing down for years now. I fear the pandemic is going to put the final nail in the coffin for small independent music venues. Ah well, they can always retrain in cyber I suppose ....
Saw the New Fast Automatic Daffodils at The Venue. New Cross used to be pretty ****ing grim, isn't it on the up now or something?
seen various live events there, from Tony Bennett (who was amazing) to the Who, and taken my daughters to see JLS and Olly Murs (sat in bar for both as they are ****e)
a **** football match is like a **** live act IMO. live gigs can be better than a footy game as the buzz you get lasts longer. the worst venue is Wembley Arena, despite seeing Bowie there, he was great but the place is ****. best Bowie gig was Earls Court Olympia but it’s closed. I have been very lucky to have seen some great acts at Wembley Stadium (Live Aid, The Stones, Queen, U2, Bowie). I do prefer outside venues like Knebworth (Led Zep) or Hyde Park (Live8) but the best current indoors is the O2.
Saw the New FADS there too. We might even have been at the same gig New Cross was a ****hole, a dangerous ****hole at that. I haven't been back there for about 15 years so I've no idea if it's on the up. But it wouldn't surprise me. Even Deptford is now a Trendy part of the Capital.
I think we may have said this before. Late 1991 iirc. My mate was at UCL so I'd knock about in London quite a bit very early 90's. New Cross was bandit country them days.
Yeah seem to remember the convo. And yes that would have been the time I was going to The Venue. Almost certain that we were both at that gig. Being in London back then was brilliant for seeing bands. You could pretty much take your pick any night of the week, jump on a train and go and see a great band. New Cross was sketchy as ****. I grew up a few miles away in Lewisham, which was just as sketchy. Funny looking back as it was just normal to me at the time. But the thought of bringing my daughter up in a place like that gives me shudders.
Was it the Proms? I was at the 1st night last year. Janacek's Glagolitic mass was the main piece. Marvellous.
I went to see The Charlatans play there and also The House of Love, who were supported by the Cranberries that night (my ex girl was a big fan) also I think Mercury Rev were on the bill that night. I would love to go and see a full Orchestra play there. It's what the place was made for.
Not a big fan of the Albert Hall. Great architecture, **** acoustics (which is why they’ve had to hang those big discs in the dome, to bounce the noise back down). My favourite London venues are the Roundhouse and The Town and Country Club (now The Forum). But I have a special fondness for The 100 Club. It’s a terrible place to watch bands really, with two **** off pillars in front of the stage. But it’s sweaty and intimate and I sort of love it. My dad used to watch jazz and skiffle bands there in the 50s, I watched punk bands there in the 70s, and last visited it a couple of years ago to see an outfit called Captain Ska. Saw Johnny Thunders play in the Boston Arms in Tufnell Park in the 80s, only time I’ve ever been in there but I’m surprised more well known acts don’t play there.
