Yeah, I think Allison is key to playing in that manner, as he’s comfortable playing the sweeper keeper and he’s also more than decent when he faces a 1 on 1. Adrian is just not good enough to do either. Even when there’s pressure on the ball, a top quality midfielder can regularly make half a yard and get a good ball away. Last season before lockdown sides would regularly park the bus when facing you, so even when they turned over the ball, they’d likely only have one player to try and hit. Any side who’s brave enough to commit bodies forwards and seek to put pressure on that high line is highly likely to have some success imo. As for tomorrow, the first goal is key imo. You tend to win games every time you get ahead, but an early goal for us, could bring real uncertainty to your side and make it more likely we could catch you on the break, as you chased the game.
Much as I don’t like to admit it, this was pretty much the same conclusion I came to after the Villa game. The only thing I would add is that our midfield did not turn up and allowed Villa time and space to look up and pick those passes. The high line makes any team vulnerable to the ball played behind and with a fast accurate striker in play, you have a problem
Hoper Jurgen gives Bobby a boot up the arse as he's going on the pitch,he needs to start scoring again.
The ridiculously high line is fashionable these days amongst a lot of top teams, and it always leaves you vulnerable to that run in behind. If your keeper and and defence are on top form then in percentage terms it usually pays off, but a lack of concentration or form and you're stuffed. Trent is great in the creative sense, but the long ball over his head catches him out nearly every time - always has done - and he's relied on his CB or a DM to bail him out. With Gomez going through a run of bad form that side is very weak atm. Like you say, we were chasing the game and always likely to go further behind because we're never going to adopt the packed defence strategy - we don't, and can't, play that way. For the last few seasons we've been vulnerable to attack, in the same way that City are, but like them, we don't get that many teams prepared to take the risk. If they get off to a good start, however, they can build on it. Perhaps teams are learning, or perhaps the Villa game was just a once in a blue moon event. We'll see. Of course I'm expecting normal service to be resumed tomorrow, obviously.
Thing with villa game was 1 goal was from Adrian pass and 4 others were massive deflections. On another day, those 5 don’t go in and all of a sudden you have 2-2 score line and villa maybe hanging on for a point. Thing I notice a lot is that we let teams shoot from 20 yards a lot. If you watch the villa goals, a lot of those deflected goals are from that area and we don’t really try and stop the shots. We try and stop the passes to create clear cut chances. With Alisson a shot from outside the box rarely goes in so I do think it’s a tactic to let players shoot, not to rush out of position to close down which opens up spaces for the pass. However, Adrian isn’t as good a shot stopper added to the deflections and suddenly everything was going in. The high line thing is rightly spoken about but as klopp says, generwlly we benefit from it much more than we concede from it. How many times did villa score from a ball in behind that left them 1v1? Can only really remember the Grealish goal right at the end.
Yeah mate, if only those 5 goals didn’t go in, it’d have been a draw. It was 3 that took a deflection btw, and they also missed 3 sitters and were also unlucky with the Watkins effort that hit the bar. Balls in behind lead directly to 3 goals iirc.
Not saying it was, but what happens in a previous game has little effect on the next game, especially a derby. I am looking forward to tomorrows game and hope both teams play their natural game as it could be a cracker. I suspect both could be cautious, in which case a score bore is on the cards.
