THE SECRET SCOUT: Joe Morrell was picked to start for Wales against England by manager Ryan Giggs... the Bristol City star showed signs of his quality with an energetic midfield display

Our scout is a top football expert who attends matches each week searching for the next star. He’ll bring you his verdict in Sportsmail.

    CLUB: Bristol City

Joe Morrell of Bristol City and Wales is the latest name targeted by Sportsmail's Secret Scout

    WHAT HAS HE GOT?
Playing as the deepest of a three-man midfield with licence to break forward, Morrell’s attacking instincts were curbed because his team had less of the possession in this game.

Although not the biggest, he got through a busy evening’s work, keeping an eye on the visitors’ No 10 while moving forward to support the other midfielders only occasionally.

His game was resourceful — winning tackles, getting the ball early and spreading the play with a couple of searching cross-field balls. Never far from the centre of the field, at one stage I wondered if he was almost welded to the centre circle.

Morrell (right) is capable of winning the ball, getting the ball early and spreading the play

At 5ft 8in, he showed no fear in challenging more hefty opponents and was brave enough to take a heavy one himself.

Tackling is a strong point but in the second half he could not command the ball as his team came under pressure.

I saw energy and battling qualities and a good example set to his team-mates. He looks a real team player.

Occasionally he may attract a yellow card but he has more pluses than minuses.

    WHAT DOES HE NEED?
I would like to have seen him break forward more, but one is never sure of the coach’s instructions.

Although he did well to manoeuvre himself out of a couple of tight situations, he would have been more able to do this if he had confidence in his left foot. He did not play a pass with it all night.

The Welshman played for his country on Thursday against England and I expect a successful season for him at Bristol City, who are top of the Championship with four wins from four.

He has been a slow burner through several loans and has shown he has the will and character to succeed.

His time must be coming, he is a winner, he is ready made for our midfield.

I thought he was injured, and that’s why he hadn’t features for us this season, yet he’s played every game for Wales this season! Come on DH tell us the truth on Morrell!

I'm hoping the reply from Holden is 'I'm not changing a winning side'.
However, I agree it would be nice to hear something from Holden.

I agree with not changing the winning side unless necessary, but we are consistently told that Morrell, Walsh and Williams are all injured, but Morrell has played 3 times for Wales so far this season, but hasn't featured in our matchday squad once this season in 7 games? Very odd, maybe he doesn't see Morrell fitting in the midfield, and may look to loan him out again?

It's a bit weird, O'Dowda, Nagy amd Morrell all played for their countries yesterday but haven't been seen starting for us this season, would be nice to hear some news about them.

I agree something is certainly not right here, I am amazed after such an injury lay off that his first game was in an international match, doesn't make sense to me.

The first 2 have featured on the bench this season and are being kept out by better players, but Morrell has not featured at all, as far as i'm aware.

Morrell only stepped up his training last Tuesday from injuring himself playing for Wales the opening weekend of the season. Playing last night was seen as him getting minutes playing for Wales.
Hence only playing the first half as he is not at full fitness yet.

Oh well, all makes sense now.

it appears that Joe is close to signing for Luton for 1 mil +

Looks like his appearances for Wales maybe was a shop window?

For me it makes sense, take the money with a nice big sell on clause, we can't keep them all.

and then try to shift Nagy and Diedhiou and Massengo on loan, job done.

Is this another one that Ashton has sold from under the manager?? Why we are selling Joe and keeping CoD is beyond me, I can only guess there are no takers for Callum?

I think that you have answered your own question here.

The unexpected emergence of Bakinson + the unexpected conversion of Weimann to central midfield (a move that seems to be working so far) + Morrell and Walsh being quite similar = we cannot accomodate them all and I suspect Holden and more importantly Morrell probably understand this, something had to give.

As for ODowda you have almost certainly have hit the nail firmly on the head, after his shocker of last season (despite being inexplicably being selected almost week in week out) who would want him?

    Now Confirmed

Morrell agrees move to Kenilworth Road
    Thursday, October 15th 2020
Bristol City would like to wish Joe Morrell the best of luck as he completes a permanent switch to Luton Town.
The 23-year-old joins the Sky Bet Championship outfit for an undisclosed fee.
Chief Executive Officer Mark Ashton said: “Joe is a fantastic person both on and off the pitch, he has been a great role model for youngsters coming through the Academy. He has broken into the Wales squad and needs regular game time, which he will get at Luton. We wish him well.”
Head Coach Dean Holden added: “Joe is a true professional and he has come on leaps and bounds in recent seasons. He has been a pleasure to work with.
“He deserves to be involved in competitive football at a high level week in, week out and this is a positive move for him. We’ve had open and honest conversations since my appointment and he felt this was something he wanted to pursue. He goes with our best wishes.”

Morrell, who progressed through the club’s Academy system made his City debut at the age of 16 in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy against Wycombe Wanderers.
His second appearance for his boyhood club came just shy of four years later in 2017 when he featured in a 5-0 win over Plymouth Argyle in the Carabao Cup, before he produced an impressive league debut against Ipswich Town in 2018.
During his time in BS3, Morrell has had loan spells at Sutton United, Margate and most notably Cheltenham Town and Lincoln City, while cementing his place in the Wales squad.
In total Morrell featured six times for the Robins.
Everyone connected with the club would like to thank Joe for his commitment and effort and we wish him luck for the future.

I was just going to post this.
Can we include a clause that he isn’t allowed to play against us?

I know you can stop players playing against you in cup games but I’m assuming you can’t in the league because it happens all the time.
It was kinda serious but I think I know the answer.

Correct, you can only prevent loaners from playing against you I believe.

I was looking forward to seeing how he fared this season , being he’s come through the academy, but the way things have panned out it’s probably for the best. He’s at an age now he needs to be playing and he’s too far down the pecking list with us . Good luck Joe
