That's brilliant, I notice on side 2 a copy of 'Sounds' which I bought every week from it's 1st edition 50 years ago. F*ck me, things like that really make you think...
I was an NME reader, from age of 13 I'd guess. Loved the big broadsheet, then they changed to a ****ty little magazine. Still bought it most weeks, but when it went free and was given away alongside Metro and other ****e it really went downhill.
Sad really, the Internet is quietly killing the printed media. Back in the 70s the music press was really vibrant, the adverts were nearly as good as the articles...
I read yesterday that Paul Heaton made a sizeable donation to them before they closed (to help pay bills and staff). I'm really not a fan of the Beautiful South but have to give huge credit to him for that.
Uber mentioned it a couple of days ago... https://www.not606.com/threads/make-us-smile.383194/page-9#post-14202769
Totally with you there Steels. I had both NME and Sounds weekly. Couldn’t be done without in my eyes. Did the occasional Melody Maker, but it was always a distant third for me.
Honourable mentions for Gang of Four - Entertainment! And Jesus and Mary Chain - Psychocandy. In my day NME was the punk/new music paper; Sounds was heavy metal/rock and Melody Maker was nothing much.
I still buy their LPs and listen to ‘em regular like. Hogarth is an excellent singer and they’ve done some very much underrated stuff post-Fish. The ‘Marbles’ album is a masterpiece.
Just looked Sounds up on Wiki and their first edition was on 10th October 1970, 50 years ago yesterday! I never knew my memory was so accurate, I have trouble remembering what happened 50 minutes ago...
It was very much the 'musicians' magazine. Plenty of funny ads for band members, I knew a few who got gigs from ads on a regular basis...
