He must have the record as Captain as well and will be only 6 caps from being the most capped British player of all time ahead of another Saint, Peter Shilton.

As we were reminded in that excellent tribute video, we didn’t have to pay Rangers anything for him as his contract was rescinded by their bankruptcy, but he insisted that we paid them something. From memory it was just under £1 million.
And then he became an instant Saints legend by scoring on his debut at the Etihad. Fairy tale stuff. What a player, what a man.

The “discussions” that used to happen in here about him. A lot of fans on this board underrated him. Quietly went about his job. Nothing flashy but so important to that team.
I think I used to describe him as a conduit, a player that linked the play superbly and could read the game so well.
