This is an excellent analogy Supcon.. Now, contrary to some people's views about me on here, I consider myself to be a 'tiny bit right of centre' when it comes to ideology and politics, but this brings out the 'leftie' in me - for this reason: Amazon are conquering the world from a retail perspective and some people may think that they deserve it for their brilliant business model and marketing genius. However, as citizens of the community they also have a responsibility - that is why we have taxes (which Amazon don't pay btw) - so that the successful businesses help out the less successful - after all, in a farcical situation where one business conquers all, nobody but their own employees would have any money to buy their products, which would lead to their ultimate collapse. I'm a very satisfied Amazon customer - but I am extremely concerned about the demise of the High Street and the social damage it is causing. In Swindon, the once vibrant 'bottom of town' has become so bad over the 20 years I've lived here that it's like playing a 'zombie apocalypse' game whenever I venture down there, with people lurching out of boarded-up shop doorways, stumbling towards me with arms outstretched wailing 'Got any change mate...?' If we allow the collapse of the High Street and everyone orders from their computer at home then we will lose what I believe is a healthy part of our social interaction. I accept that others may disagree - and I myself do a load of online ordering, so I am, I admit, part of the problem, but those smaller retailers simply can't compete with the likes of Amazon with their vast resources, zero tax bill and huge logistical setup. I don't advocate crippling Amazon, but they should definitely be taxed to subsidise - or at least slow down - the demise of the High Street. The same goes for football - if left unchecked we could end up with a choice of 8 superclubs to support, or watch a kickabout on the Downs. This is what we pay governments for - to allow success to thrive, but not to destroy. it's about getting the balance right - more to do with SOCIAL responsibility than giving a 'free handout' to less successful ventures. That's my view anyway for what its worth.....
Quite possibly, and before that Boston Utd, Scarborough Town, Maidstone Utd, Barrow, Workington Town, Accrington Stanley, Bradford Park Avenue etc ? Or maybe not all of those were financial issues, and a couple of examples may just have been clubs that weren't re-elected via the voting system 'back in the day'
Amazon should pay their taxes just like most other companies have to. They are generating billions of pounds in revenue and therefore should be subject to income tax along with Google, Microsoft and all the other tax dodgers.
told me to get rid of a damaged item sent me a £5 voucher off next purchase and told me to destroy/get rid of the broken glass jar … now 3 weeks later demanding I send it back or will charge me for it …...
biggest problem is we will never do anything about it as citizens.... we should help our own economies [ posted an article a month or so ago regarding relative costs etc ] but we still buy Chinese ...had a new tyre fitted the other day didn't know the make at the time but looking at when cleaning wheel it said made in China FFS had i known it would not have been fitted I have spent around £1000 on stuff during last 4 month's, out of items I have REJECTED 11 items of Chinese origin and has cost me 6% more to source elsewhere, A further 3 items I rejected I saved 9% ! 2 from UK 1 from Germany … FOOD WISE check where it comes from! 19 items of Chine/ china origin rejected and replacement EUROPE/AFRICA /UK cost me £34.75 instead of £32.95 the gherkins were far superior!
hey ho as per normal did a bit of research on why ...answer is probable shortage due to this years uk crop of rapeseed. the sowing season was interrupted by the early bad weather so instead of sowing late which would risk the harvest a lot of farmers didn't sow it, maybe as high as 30% down on average year! my guess is it will also cost farmers more for cattle feed as the squeezed seed is a "cheap feed" although all my contacts as farmers do state they got bumper hayledge/ silage cuts some a third cut has been double third cut yields of past years so are well stocked with fresh. The bad winter of shortages did use up most of the stale stock [ you sometimes see tatty looking wraps of hayledge or silage in field stacking areas some often just "write it off and replace with the new ] gosh what cloud burst road outside is a river and first floor extension roof is a water spout of water from down pipe off the main roof … a black refuse tray goes merrily floating by ...oh shame it has stopped at my van parked outside! ….. started again heavier! the farmer whose land we "invade Thursday nights " had bales of hayledge that were 5 years 4 years 3 years old only about 20 … but that was a couple weeks of feeding! guess the price of cooking oil will increase.
what is a Chinese takeaway most food in there you cant get in China except maybe the occasional name of ….. don't go to Chinese or TAKEAWAYS in general excepting BK / SUBWAY / LOCAL FISH AND CHIP SHOP.... the question to be asked is Why is there rarely no food waste outside a Chinese or Indian restaurant [ or similar country types ] …. answer waste not want not … and I BET all the food wasted in a restaurant is not consumed by the purveyors of the same …. imagine a grisly bit of meat might be served up 3 or 4 times in one night! or indeed a good bit that gets left someone full passed on to next customer!
Despite all the paper nonsense last year, I've always thought of Corbyn as pretty useless as a leader, but at heart a principled, nice man. I always felt he was at least trying to do the right thing even if he was a bit crap, which is refreshing in politics. Bit disappointed by this to be honest. He deserves to be fined.
Agreed, but Dominic Cummings needed to be sacked without a second thought for his stupidity and that didn't happen, so I doubt if this will hold water either. Double standards all round
Oh yeah absolutely, what Cummings did was far worse and far more stupid. And that's forgetting all the other dirty **** he's done in the past...
He wasn't mates with IRA, Hezbollah,Hamas, Castro, Chavez and the rest of their murderous ilk, stupid yes but treachorous no.
This is true as well - although I don't know how much of his interaction with those vile organisations was motivated by a genuine wish for 'friendship' born out of treacherous loathing of Britain and our armed forces and how much was a naïve and misguided aim to try and bring peace through engagement with them. Either way it was distasteful and ill-advised - probably accelerated the anti-British 'WOKE' movement and DEFINITELY destroyed any credibility he had in my eyes - and in the eyes of many, many other people - including core Labour voters - and members. BUT - on the subject of breaking lockdown rules; yes he should be fined - and Cummings should have been sacked. As has been said before; neither will happen.
He was fined according to a Labour MP today on Susanna Reid show. I call it that because she is fit as and is the reason I watch it.
Oh wiz mate. This is what I mean by the paper talk - honestly he has so many criticisms that can be aimed at him but all of that was complete nonsense. He was the only 'threat' to the Tories at the time who had the papers printing what they wanted. It was a smear campaign over months and months, regardless of truth. It's amazing people actually bought it. Does anyone really believe that this old man, who's a veggie and buys his clothes from local charity shops, was really a terrorist, or even a Czech spy? It's beyond parody. It's absolutely ludicrous.
Good, deservedly so. It'll be interesting to see if Stanley Johnson gets fined also. Hopefully they will announce that on Susanna Reid too.
I can't stand Suzanna Reid either. She's another stuck up, snooty female TV presenter like the horrible Naga Munchetty on the good old left wing BBC
