Well im sorry to say if you defend like that for 15 mins then you deserve to lose the game, although on another day we could have scored 6 or 7. <doh>

What lawrence was doing for the first goal i'll never know, however wombles were quick with very good movement upfront and should unlock a lot of teams this year, scoring a few goals in the process.

its a difficult one but i hope hess has learnt that sometimes you have to change a winning team as you will never be playing the same team twice and they all required different set ups.

i think we missed martin today and whelpdale and lee looked a shadow of the players who came to us on loan last year

anyways thats my vent of crap done and dusted feel free to have yours

    on to portvale coyg!!

It was unfortunate that the back 4 ALL decided to have a shocker on the SAME day. I hadn't recovered from the error by Lawrence ( & almost felt a bit of sympathy for him - as thus far he has done quite well ) -- when - in goes no.2
and no.3 before Hess could shut the barn door. We were reasonable in the 2nd half. Rooney tried TOO hard!! at times and needs to learn when to lay off the ball. Kedwell should have scored from THAT header. Wimbledon's keeper made a brilliant double save when a goal appeared certain. We wasted most of our 6 corners - the ball flying over everyone.
All in all the 2nd half performance gives some positives.
I thought Lawrence needs to reflect on his performance and consider an apology to Gills fans instead of the strop he had when substituted.
I was less than impressed with Payne who appeared to think that the first half performance was amusing judging by the smile he had on his face- and when a fan mentioned it he looked surprised.
    One last thing - Hess has permitted me to give you a transcript of his half time team talk. I have had to censor some bit - but here's the rest;

I agree with Jokeykid. I just got back having been in with the afcw supporters behind the goal which saw all the action. Perfect to see just how bad Frampton Lawrence and Richards were in the first half hour. So much for that rocksolid defence. I suppose Lawrence has built up enough credits to be allowed an off day but he was totally at fault with goal 1 Frampton proved he is no full back by setting up the cross for goal 2 and Fish set up goal 3 but he was trying to repair a total cockup by Richards. Lets be clear it was 3 monumental errors that cost this game and nothing to do with tactics, team selection or motivation.
When it came to scoring Rooney should have had a hattrick. He is handicapped by having two right feet where his knees should be but he has to take the opportunities first time hitting the ball with toe, shin, knee or dickend without having to pull the ball back onto his right foot for a glory shot. Having said all that he still had a good game with involvement for 90 mins rather than fading out as used to happen. A word on Jackman. He looked a class act and looked like a Championship player on loan. Pity about the rest of midfield and defence. Jokeykid hits the nail firmly on the head with his comments about Lee and Whelpdale.
Not quite as bad as the score sounds and this was a case of Hessy being let down by some players. The powers of concentration of Josh Gowling live on in Frampton, Lawrence and Richards and Richards was dead lucky to escape a second yellow after 25 mins. There is still hope for next week. Wimbledon were just about worth the win for their bright start but Gills outplayed them for much of the second half and had many more goalworthy chances. Flitney had little to do and had no chance with the goals.

I thought Danny Jackman was fantastic my MOTM. I thought the back four looked inadequate and slow. They just didn't react to anything. I could've told Hess how they were gonna play, two quick men up front, you need to drop and cut it out. Kedwell didn't look bothered for me which is disappointing. Rooney just cannot pass, a couple of those runs, he could've passed and set up someone else and score. Kuffour looked good, looked like he cared. But no-one else cared

That is where you are wrong. Lawrence does not need to apologise to the fans and neither does Stephen Payne.

Lawrence came off the pitch wondering why and I think it was the right move by hess to make a more balanced back 4. I was unlucky enough to be should next to the biggest idiotic wazzok ever to grace a football ground with his 2 mates. He slated, swore and insulted Lawrence in such a way that on the street, he would have been arrrested. I would have reacted the same way lawrence did.

At half time, all payne did was get up out of the dugout and that very same guy screamed 'You are useless payne. Get back to non-league. You have always been **** and should ******** home.' That poor kid must have felt pretty down after that. Just for stepping out of the dugout. Maybe smiling was all he could do to brush it all off.

He also carried on slating and abusing hess for the entire game. Same with southall, nouble, fish, whelpdale, weston.....actually, i don't think there was one player that this loud mouth vocally abused.

Unfortunatly, this is the type of fan that is always heard and it sickens me.

As for the game, well, very bad first 15. last 45 were brilliant and we should have won. Even being 3-0 down. Another day, maybe all those chances would have gone in. I also never wanna stand in a tin box, crammed full of people, in extreme heat ever again! Great way to sweat away the pounds!

I can accept your point that nobody should go over the top to criticise their team - so as not to knock confidence ( still further .) The worst I. might do is to boo at a really poor performance. I agree that we should have scored enough from the chances we created in the second half - to outweigh the rubbish in the opening 22 minutes. As I said, Lawrence has done well for us up to now-but, as he came off the pitch I think he would have got a bit more sympathy from some of the more stupid fans ( as well as the rest of us ) if he raised his hands in a gesture of contrition.THEN he could have his spat with Hess.
I too heard the idiot that slated nearly everyone in our team. I think that his opinion is not universally shared - so I think that we can more or less dismiss it...... Although to be fair to him, it was Hess who was very vocal in the swearing department ( at least he showed he cares ) Unfortunately for Hess goals 2 & 3 came too quick and ANY team will struggle to recover from 0-3.
I was pleased with the second half performance. On another day, with only a small amount of luck we would have easily won the match ( even from 0-3 )- That's why I mentioned the 'positives' thar can be taken.
No matter what, I will always be there. U T G

I was not at the game yesterday, although I am getting a very good insight into it via the comments, also good to see some opposite opinions, giving the thread a balanced overall view.

We missed Jack Payne sitting in front of the back four. We have been up against quick teams before and having Payne in front of Framps and Shaggy just gives them a little more time to get in position. As has been said before we were punished for individual errors not a failure in tactics or technical ability so lets not get too carried away with the doom and gloom
