Remember it being reported at the time either in the HDM or one of the match programmes ( which were excellent in those days) that the magical 100,000 had been reached. The 'official' attendance figures in those days were a bit flexible to say the least. If you remember they even gave the gate receipts in the HDM and the programme. Does anyone seriously believe that all the gate receipts, which were all in cash, were declared ? I was once in the old south stand on a non match day ( could have been a reserve team game too) and found a sack of pound coins stashed under one of the turnstiles which you used to transfer from the terraces to the seats. It was handed in to the someone at the club who showed no surprise at all and said it could have been there for weeks. A long time afterwards but through the same turnstiles and counting system Don Robinson thwarted a fiddle on the block of turnstiles into Kempton from the main car park after a tip off. It was ripe at the old ground and probably every other ground in the country at that time.
My best mate, Chris Barker, from us been born to 6/7 went to live in Northampton as his dads company moved him. Gutted still all these years later. He lived a couple of doors away and we were inseparable, always playing in the ten foot. wonder how he’s doing?

Ah, so there really were 18,000 at every game at the Boulevard like FC fans claim? You certainly used to wonder about these things when Sunderland or someone else brought 3,000 or so and the crowd declared was very similar to that of Oxford or Luton who brought a bus full. Though Don Robbie supposedly inflated our crowd a couple of times to ensure it was higher than FC's when they played on the same day. Which wouldn't surprise me knowing Robbo.

Lay off Burns and Swann. He obviously wasn't advocating we sign Giggs and Beckham FFS, just probably bemoaning the lack of quality at set pieces and the ability to cut inside or run a man. Also, we all know Fraizer is great in the 6 yard box, but the reason he played for us twice and ended up at Huddersfield is the fact he never proved any kinda consistently quality beyond that, and you need more to your game for even a mid - level premier league club. In 10th century, both Southampton and Northampton were both called just Hámtún in Old English, meaning 'home town'. I'm guessing there was no need to make a distinction originally since one was in the Kingdom of Wessex and the other in the Kingdom of Mercia, which were independent kingdoms. When England was unified, it was necessary to distinguish them.
