Prompted by Roller posting the Millwall v Rs clip from 73 I was wondering what was your worst experience away from home? I was at the Den that day, horrible place but we won and confirmed promotion. My worst was a couple of years later against Birmingham. First trip to that charming city, was like stepping back 30 years. St Andrews a really awful shack, even worse than now, in a truly threatening part of town. Pissed with rain, crap game, we lost 1-0 to a Trevor Francis wonder goal that was goal of the season, so endlessly repeated to remind me of a dire day. Stood in the home end for some reason so couldn't relax at all as a lippy 13 year old. Deeply depressing experience - worse than being really angry at a crap performance, marginally better than being hit ( that's only happened to me at England games.....by an Italian policeman)
Brisbane Road one year, watching Stan Bowles playing for Orient. Can't remember who the Os were playing (was it Rangers?) or how come I ended up over that way... Just that sad and empty kind of feeling.
'that sad empty kind of feeling' that's it and the knowledge that that's an afternoon or day completely wasted - time you will never get back.......
Brighton at the God-awful Withdean Stadium, Gino scored for us, Terrell Forbes was sent off and that little runt Leon Knight scored two goals, even fish and chips on the pier couldn't make up for it...
The 5-0 at Southend on a friday night was pretty grim. The 5-0 at Forest a few years ago was actually one of my best ever away trips.
Luton town away i think it was 74/75 shut behind the wire fence Luton scored in 6th minute of injury time 1st half we equalised 2nd half (Clive allen i think) locked in till 17.30 pm marched by the old bill passed a multi stirey carpark where the Luton fans pissed on us,caught the old soccer special that had no seats or light bulbs in the carridge,a throughly miserable day.
4-1 defeat at Oxford, Tony Scully scored for us, just felt so depressed at how absolutely crap we'd become in such a short time, I think it was only two to three years earlier we were riding high in the Prem. I think it was the game that Rangers fans broke into Ray Harfords car!
In recent times the 1 nil defeat in the league cup replay away at burnley on a crap night in feb or something when about 100 ( or so it seemed) poor Qpr souls made the pointless journey up north. Waste of time money and a few hours of my life.
Leeds away in the FA cup 90's i think. Leeds scored the winner in the last few minutes and at full time their fans came on the pitch to celebrate . After 5 mins they decided to attack our 'pen'. Me being young and boistrous stood goading them to come at us, thinking that 'cos of the high fence they could never get to us........ oh how wrong i was. And all the windows of the train got smashed on the way out.....

away to Spurs a few years ago and a certain Clive Allen hit a hatrick. Plus a game aganst Wycombe where we lost 4 -1, had two goals disallowed and two players sent off (4 in total were dismissed). On a plus side I managed to get Rob Styles a few gigs at Panto!! the worse referee I hae ever seen. I even remember as I got to my car, speaking to a local and I said to him scratching me head, Wycombe won 4-1, 4 players sent off two goals disallowed, the worst referee I have ever seen and I am more in shock at the wrst display of refereeing I have ever seen
Stockport away in the league cup Monday night circa 1989, 0-0 and drove the wrong way up the M56 after didn't get home until 4:00AM
Barnsley away a good few years back on a special. Thecaway end were terraces, the toilets were being rebuilt and the locals stoned the train as we left. Nice. Also Cambridge Utd. The away end backed on to allotments and the locals would throw all sorts of garden refuse over the wall. Lastly Grimbsby away on a Tuesday about 10 years back. Lost 2-0. What a dump.
Maybe Wolves away sometime in the early 80's. Spent all my paper round money on the trip and we lost 4-0. But at least there were some goals that day. I remember going to Shrewsbury around the same time and it was hours and hours, I couldn't believe it wasn't even as far as Wales! And no-one scored or even came close. Had no money to eat anything on the way back, but at least it was a football special full of rangers fans.
Oh theres been some strong candidates, a close second was Grimsby away. Left sunny London spent afternoon in combinations of thunder/lightning/snow/hail and football special home spent most of its time broken down in sidings, no food or drink on it. Got back to London about 2am from memory. But my worst away day by far, was Southampton early 80's, a roasting Aug bank holiday at the old Dell. We arrived before the supporters club train, and it was packed in that crap away end even when we got there. Add the supporters special crowd, and we had far too many fans in such a small pen. Sweltering in there, dripping in sweat, in the open end exposed to the sun. Think we lost, but heat exhaustion and sun stroke do funny things to the memory. Herded down to station after game, but somehow ambushed by Saints fans and ended up wrong side of thin blue line. Got sussed by locals, and had to quickly go garden fence hopping to get back to QPR side. Aint been back since, mentally scarred for life. Though, typing this has gone some way to help with the therapy needed. Go cold even now, when I hear the "saints go marching in" tune.
AHHHHH....This thread is bringing back some good memories...... Seems i might of bumped into a lot of you in the past as i was at quite a few of the games mentioned
Jalfrezi. Remember the Dell game well and ended up in the home side of the fence at the invitation of the Police. Some nutter then pulled a knife which went down well.
glad you got out ok mate, that got pretty hairy in there. To this day, dunno why, I mean, Southampton ? ? Who'd have thought it ?
