I am intrigued. What did happen to black composers hundreds of years ago? Do we not know who they were or know any of their songs because of racism by any chance?

Oh yes, ever wondered why so many BAME folk have got STI's? Me neither but apparently dark people are not getting the message about safe sex because of racism. The images used in text books and for educational purposes show white people and it seems our colonial cousins don't associate getting bad aids or the clap with being of ethnicity. Maybe sex ed teachers need to take a leaf out of the porno book instead, it is full of negroes pumping tiny white teens.

I rushed to change the channel but I heard that one conductor wasn't wanted by an orchestra because of their skin colour. I can accept that will have happened 100s of years ago but it doesn't happen now.

I used to play rags on the piano, when I was younger. Scott Joplin was well appreciated in his time.

Although some of the song titles might not have been that PC, for today's market.

    He was indeed.

He later went on to star in The Black And White Minstrels Show in Nigeria in the 1960's.

As it's over 100 years ago, I reckon it's a safe bet they'll be decomposing now.

"The Entertainer" by Joplin is probably one of the most recognisable piano tunes ever. I doubt there are many BAME folks know any of his works or that he was black. Let's just say Stormzy is highly unlikely to be sampling any Joplin stuff soon.

It is a commonly held belief that white British artists in the 60's were responsible for educating Americans about their own Blues history but by the time rock and roll came along it was already a dying art. It's easy to say racism played a part but it is more to do with the style of music, even though Blues' popularity was on the decline Jazz aficionados in America were well aware of the talented musicians of ethnicity. Americans get a bit pissed off being told they don't know their Howling Wolf from their Sonny Boy Williamson but the popularity of the likes of Charlie Parker and Thelonious Monk shows it wasn't all about racism.

Having said that you can give me Muddy Waters over Dizzy Gillespie any day of the week. Love me a bit of Delta Blues but I cannot abide Jazz. Horses for courses.
