I was talking about the situation in Germany with a colleague based out there after we'd finished the formal part of our meeting, and his take was that Germans are - mostly - more law abiding and cautious, with people mixing less during the crisis

I'm surprised that you haven't renounced your British citizenship yet Watford

Is there anything that you do like about being British?

I lived in Italy for 4 years. At no stage did I notice the locals being an outstandingly rule abiding bunch. In fact it was a matter of honour to bend the rules as much as possible.

But perhaps they sacrifice their freedom when advised that it might keep them healthy. Thank god we Brits are made of sterner stuff. Live free or die! Oops, that’s New Hampshire.

Or are we? Just back from the supermarket, buying fresh food. Noticed that, once again, the bog roll has disappeared. I hope all the twats who do this suffer long term constipation, giving way to waves of catastrophic diarrhoea, which hits far too fast for bog paper to come into play.

Nearly a third of recent ‘Covid deaths’ were not caused by Covid
Covid-19 was not the underlying cause of nearly 30 per cent of officially recorded Covid deaths over the summer.

Incredibly, nearly a third of the ‘Covid deaths’ recorded over the past eight weeks were not, in fact, caused by Covid.

Oxford University’s Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine (CEBM) has revealed that in this period, in 29 per cent of the deaths for which Covid-19 was recorded on a death certificate, it was not the underlying cause of death.

In one week in late August, this figure reached an astonishing 35 per cent. The overall percentage for the pandemic as a whole is 7.8 per cent – about one in 13 – but the proportion has been much higher over the summer. Nevertheless, these deaths still feature on official government tallies of the Covid death toll.

It is not the first time the CEBM has raised questions about overcounting deaths from Covid. Back in August, over 5,000 deaths had to be removed from the official total – well over one in 10. This was because, under Public Health England’s original definition of a Covid-19 death, anyone who tested positive for the virus who later died was counted as a Covid death. In theory, this would therefore include someone who tested positive but was later hit by a bus.

Despite the fact that Covid still dominates our lives, thankfully deaths are at extraordinary low levels. Office for National Statistics data show that in August, Covid was not even in the top 20 causes of death in England. Nor was it in the top 15 causes in Wales.

But the ongoing fear has dangerous consequences. Back in March, the government was frightened into lockdown by vastly exaggerated projections. The lockdown and the restrictions since then have wrecked the economy and ruined lives. If panic prevails, we will end up repeating that catastrophe.

The French had a revolution and still cling to the idea of freedom...whether it be freedom to protest, freedom to retire at 61, freedom to claim help from the Government if needed...but that said, people are obeying the rules here in a way that they weren't when I was back in England during the summer.

All stand for the Prime Minister of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, talking at the English only tonight I believe.

****ing hell, did I hear that right? The army to ‘back up’ the police? WTF?

All the blame for the rise placed on people not following the rules. No hint of an apology for any errors of strategy. And yet again, the promise of mass testing with instant results is made, and it will all be fine in the spring.

No, he was on up here too - quickly followed by the First Minister, who had already given all the instructions to Parliament this afternoon.

Boris looks ****ed - wouldn't be surprised to find out he's suffering from Long-COVID

What’s this about up to 90% false positives?

I can't honestly see what these restrictions are going to achieve. 10pm curfew on boozers and the likes. Does Covid not spread til after 10pm? The biggest social environment that I can see for spreading the disease is the school environment. 1700 pupils at our local school. For aguements sake, say they are in families of 4 on average, that's 5100 people, say they stick to the guidelines of only meeting in the rule of 6, thats now up to 8500 people. Factor in a percentage that dont adhere to rules, factor in all those parents that go to the pub for a few. Your talking around 10,000 people and thats just using our local school as an example. Obviously people need to work and kids need an education, I'm starting......yet again, to think that this is unbeatable and we might aswell just go with the flow.

Just to add that within a 10 mile radius, we have 5 schools (not including primary). The figures socialising for restricting this disease are unmanageable.

I heard Julia Hartley-Brewer giving Grant Shapps a good grilling. She quoted ONS figures and he couldn’t answer, but said he would raise the issue in parliament.

That in addition to the 30% over count in July and August deaths, what’s really going on?

2 minute explanation from Carl Hennigan that seems to support the idea of massive false positives.

Share your frustration. Personal responsibility and integrity need to be remembered. But let's not at the same time forget the sickening excuses made as government closed ranks to protect DOMINIC ****ING CUMMINGS. Particularly puke making especially when Boris got all heavy this evening with his scripted hand gestures threatening dire consequences for us all if the minority don't abide by the rules. Not too late to make a shining example of the man who is the first excuse put forward by those who cant' be bothered to comply. Not too late to own up to the mistake of not stringing him up from a lamppost somewhere on the road between Barnard Castle and Durham.
