I wonder how much Ings would demand in wages - he is in a pretty strong position after last season and this will be his last big payday. Unless it is something ridiculous I kind of feel we have no choice but to pay it - even if he were to ask for £125k/week (£6.5m a year), we all know what would have happened last season if he wern't at the club. I guarantee that relegation would cost us a little more than £6.5m/season!!
For a player that clearly has a kind side, as denoted by his charitable work, it would sadden me if he was holding the club to ransom for a wage as high as £125k per week. I know it is supposition, but at a time when people are losing their jobs, and life is far from the norm we were used to, it would show a lack of awareness that I don’t associate with him. It also frustrates me when the phrase “last big pay day” is mentioned as a valid reason to move on. These guys are, unless they are financially inept, already millionaires and set for life.
Ings is currently on £75k per week (allegedly). So I would imagine that £90-£100k would be what it takes to get him to extend? When you consider what we pay players like Long and Forster you can see why he’d want a lot more, but £125k per week is almost a 70% pay rise. Not as simple as that though, probably after better goal bonuses etc too.
“Last big pay day” Always makes me giggle. Then cry. He could burn his boots this morning and I think he’d be ok. Just.
"We tried, honest. Not our fault nobody would sell us a striker for half a packet of rolos and a Capri Sun."
You jest but some on twitter are actually believing that to be so. This forum does restore my faith in there being sane Saints fans out there.
I sometimes wonder why we will only look to replace him if anyone is now desperate enough to have him....??!!... why didn’t we look to replace him about twelve months ago when it was clear he was never going to fulfil his potential?? Methinks a lastminute.com replacement.... same as with PEHs replacement if we ever get one. Maybe looking in the footballing equivalents middle aisle of Lidl might not suffice if the first two games are anything to go by??
Wolves are getting gutted the same way we were when we had a solid season. First Doherty to spurs now Jota to liverpool. Feel a bit bad for the fans as thought they had the funds to hold onto the key players.
I don't feel sorry for them at all. Owned by China's 3rd largest company. They've already signed a new forward for £36m and beat off competition due to Mendez - and kept hold of Jimenez, Tarore, Nevez, Dendonker, and their sole Englishman etc. Their new gold is real but I find this modern incarnation is rather ersatz.
