Struggled here, but I gave it a go.

Crewe derives it's name from the Welsh word for weir, Creu and that is the name used in the Domesday Book for what was the nearest settlement.

The town itself was created in 1843 as a Railway Settlement. Prior to that, it had a population of 70. By 1871, it had reached 40,000.

Oddly, the Town of Crewe and the station have never been part of the original Township of Crewe, which eventually changed its name to Crewe Green to distinguish from Crewe Town which had overtaken it. There is a local riddle to explain it: "The place which is Crewe is not Crewe, and the place which is not Crewe is Crewe."

Crewe was actually the name chosen for the Station, so the place got it's name from the Station, rather than the other way around.

Crewe Alexandra played cricket and probably rugby at the Earle Street Ground before they decided to form a football club in 1877.

The unique in football terms 'Alexandra' most likely takes it's name from the nearby Hotel where the teams met, which itself got it's name from Princess Alexandra of Denmark, who married Queen Victoria’s eldest son, later King Edward VII.

They did not go professional at first, which ultimately cost them a number of grounds and let to them playing on an empty piece of ground known as 'Old Sheds Field'.

The club fans seem to have a love hate relationship with the railway connection, preferring the Alex, to the Railwaymen. Although after the emblem of a train wheel was replaced by a football on the club crest, fans campaigned to reinvent the wheel.

In 1980 Peter Coyne scored the clubs first hat trick in 4 years, and was rewarded with a colour TV. When he later scored another hat trick, they gave him a cabinet to put it in.

Crewe were Bruce Grobbelaar's first team in England, when Ron Atkinson failed to acquire him for West Brom after Ron Atkinson introduced them.

Well I've voted for City to lose all games so far and they have won 'em all (one way or another). I've decided to keep up predicting them to lose in the hope that they keep proving me wrong. (which I will be very happy about).

Actually optimistic for this game which seems strange after last season, I think it’ll be 3-0 city and a fairly comfortable game.

They used to make Rolls -Royce in Crewe but after they were bought by BMW they built a new factory at Goodwood(?)
Bentley are still made in Crewe but they're just a expensive VW.

I'd settle for a win (1 or 2 nil) obviously, but more importantly I'd like to see a continuation of the progress we've made so far. I like the look of the new players we've got thus far, not to mention the development of KLP etc. Although, it's league one; it is still very early in the season, and I don't want to jinx it, I really I like what I'm seeing on the field. The body language and mindset is different, the confidence is coming back and we've got a team that's working together again. I have that lovely warm feeling again that I can't wait for the next game...bring it on.

Totally agree - I think its one thing playing a premeier league team in a knockout, to a regular League game shortly after. Obvs wanting the win, but playing well, keeping the performance going three games in a row, and setting the stall out to be the team to beat in this league from the start is important too.

Was the first time in along whil I've ejnoyed two City games in a row - hoping for the hat-trick.

    Today's presser...

GM: “The only person missing is Tom Eaves.” “George Long is back. He got a whack in training and he’s had a skin graft but he’s trained this week.”

GM: “We’ve got good options in the full back areas. We made a point of recruiting in those areas so bringing in Lewie Coyle and Josh Emmanuel has made us stronger.”

GM: “We’ve got forward players who can play across all three positions and the players are chomping at the bit to play.”

GM: “The games come thick and fast and we need to make sure we’ve got a robust group.”

GM: “Thomas Mayer ticked all the boxes. We’ve been keeping an eye on him and once we knew he was available, it was a no-brainer. He’s perfect for the way we want to play.”

GM: “We’re governed by the council’s decision. We’re disappointed we aren’t able to welcome fans back and it’s a kick in the teeth but we have to abide by the rules. Hopefully we’ll put that aside and get the job done tomorrow.”

GM: “I’ve never been more determined in my life.” “Everyone here wants to get this club back into the Championship.” “Our home form is going to be so important this season. People are going to come here with no fear and we need to ensure we have no complacency.”

GM: “We need to let everyone know that our home is our home and ensure nobody is going to come here and take an easy three points from us.”

GM: “Defensively we’ve looked a lot stronger. We’ve worked hard on our press and we know we’ve got a lot to do.” “We’re creating chances, we just need to be more ruthless. I know that will come.”

**** hole. Doesn’t belong in Cheshire. Borders should be redrawn to position Crewe in Staffs, where it would better suited. It’s like Stoke’s poor relation. A bomb would improve the place. The people are weirdos too.

    City 3 nowt.

It is a long time (if ever) since I heard GM on the front foot like this. You can (or at least I can) feel it coming from the team and whilst the jury is still out on Grant, I am glad he's been positive (with some evidence) rather just mouthing the words.

Weird hearing Grant do a presser and sound like a proper manager. A nice change, hope it continues.

I've been paying £12.50 a month for live streams of all games through the official site as an ex-pat. Now it appears there's no option on iFollow to do that and we're asked to pay £10 for each match, working out at about £60 a month. Or am I missing something?
