Sunderland AFC are pleased to confirm the signing of former Hartlepool United attacking-midfielder Josh Hawkes. The 21-year-old has signed a two-year deal with the Lads following the expiration of his contract at Pools and becomes the Under-23s’ seventh addition of the summer. Hawkes made his first-team debut back in 2017 and has already made 63 career appearances for the National League side, scoring 13 goals in that time. The midfielder has also enjoyed loan spells with Northern Premier League sides Marske United and Dunston UTS After putting pen to paper on a deal at the Academy of Light, Hawkes said: “I’m over the moon. It’s been in the pipeline for a while now, so to get it finally sorted is great. I can’t wait to get started.” Head coach Elliott Dickman added: “We’re really pleased with this signing. He has lots of National League experience with Hartlepool and that will really benefit him and the younger lads in the group. Our job is to improve him further and hopefully he will progress with us.”
Good luck to the the lad However I feel we are a revolving door for all our kids Very few make the first team and after a year os there moved on Time for changes and try and introduce these kids into the first team set up
Which makes you wonder why he's gone into the under 23's? We are crying out for a decent attacking midfielder in the first team
We already have exciting young attacking midfield players, products of the academy at the club. Hope they are not pushed further back and that selection is on merit and ability alone, not always the case here in the past few years imo.
Could this lad be related to Warren Hawkes who was on our books in the 80/90a iirc then went to ply his trade in Scotland?
Seems he could have an attitude problem.... https://rokerreport.sbnation.com/20...fans-give-thoughts-on-sunderlands-new-recruit
I asked my Hartlepool supporting mate what he’s like. He said he’s got a goal and a pass in him but doesn’t graft. That’s him never getting in the team with Parky the dinosaur here.
Could be bad news but personally I think we could do with a few more mavericks. I like the sound of his aggressive shoot on sight policy it might rub off on a few of the other gun shy lads we've got like Hume.
Appears to be a lot more interest in bringing in players of a better calibre for the U23 side this close season , hopefully this is a step in the right direction after last years humiliation and badly needed .
Front three whoever they are should be showing the way, Hume had as many shots as the three central strikers on Saturday judging by the highlights. Add goals to his game and he will be off to the Championship by January, if so I wont be wondering why, or blaming SD if he is still here.
Every player we bring in first team or under 23 There all should be better than we have Otherwise what’s the point We already have squad fillers throughout the whole set up of the club
