    SHANTOUS MELODY 7/1 Fontwell 5:05

Market support will be hugely significant but I am delighted to get in early at the price and see what happens. Sometimes dams dont pass it on but this ones Mum is Glens Melody and if he has half her ability he will be smart.

Even "tank top" will have spotted this one!

With Buick able to ride at Doncaster today and in Ireland tomorrow, there is obviously no restrictions for the jockeys, so I am now very puzzled why Ryan Moore isnt on Santiago in the Leger. At first I thought they must fancy Japan and are planning a hatchet job on Ghaiyathh by taking him on with Magical and Armory from the start, but Japan is absolutely stinking in the Champion betting, so are we to believe Moore would rather win a Matron than a Leger, and Fancy Blue is no gimmie at a mile against some decent opposition. Really strange he would pass up what looks a golden opportunity in a classic.

    Fontwell 5.05 Shantous Melody @ 10/1

Out of a Willie Mullins bumper horse and mares hurdle winner Glens Melody, this one should not be 10/1 on the books the night before it debuts. It is by Shantou which is a good sire for bumpers and its obviously nicely related for bumpers too. Trained at a yard who can ready one for a bumper win, and is the most likely bumper winner on paper.

It is obvious this has been priced up because of the names on the racecard rather than the horses pedigrees.

At present, jockeys travelling to Ireland for Group 1 races are exempt from the quarantine regulations so they do not have to spend a fortnight at home when they come back like Dettori had to when he went to France.

Ive found my banker for the Breeders Cup, for those who like to get on before the price goes.

    BC Sprint - Volatile 4/1

The top of the market is littered with injured horses and horses who wont be running in the race, there doesnt appear to be a serious threat to him and I wouldnt be surprised if he ended up a shade odds on. Hes been brought along steadily by Assmussen who trained last years winner Mitole, and a few other top sprinters over the years, he was very green last season but showed he was easily able to lay up on strong fractions in his comfort zone and now as a 4yo he is putting it all together and demolishing fields. He is 5 from 6 with 3 wins in 3 races this season, stepping up from a listed race to winning easily his first crack at a G1, with a few established sprinters not able to lay a glove on him. He was 2 hundredths of a second off the track record for 6f at Churchill eased up, hes a monster and hes just hitting his peak in a division that has fallen apart with Mitole retiring and Shancelots injury. Basically this is 4/1 for the horse to turn up at the start, if the bet makes it that far just put you feet up and enjoy the show.

Dont say im not good to yous.

Got to be with Santiago, only danger is Galileo Chrome imo, not seeing it at all with Hukum, scraped a handicap off 90 at Ascot and won a listed level group 3 last time, be amazed if he starts fav and surprised if he starts shorter than 9/2. Pyledriver won't stay and Galileo Chrome will just come up short I think in 2nd, length and a half maybe.

A choice of top Group 1 races today, although not necessarily great betting opportunities.

Ghaiyyath has chased away most of the opposition in the Irish Champion Stakes and the formbook suggests that he should have no difficulty continuing his winning run having put up the two best performances anywhere this year. But is there skulduggery afoot? Aidan O’Brien is running the three year old Armory who appears to have no realistic chance. So is he here to take on the favourite for the lead and act as a spoiler? I am not sure why Ryan Moore has opted for the disappointing Japan over the consistent Magical as she seems the most likely to benefit if the champion elect falters, but she was well beaten at York. French raider Sottsass has come a long way to battle for minor honours but there is a lack of opportunity at home for a horse whose only significant career performance was last year’s Prix Du Jockey Club.

The Matron Stakes seems to be dominated by a number of confused form lines, suggesting that it is not a great place to look for a safe bet. Over this trip, Fancy Blue was beaten by Peaceful in the Irish 1000 Guineas (So Wonderful third, New York Girl fourth, Albigna sixth, Valeria Messalina ninth) but subsequently got her revenge over further in the Prix de Diane and added the Nassau later. With Fancy Blue the mount of Ryan Moore that surely means Peaceful will win. Albigna has disappointed on both starts but is a speculative choice to come good today.

What does Moore staying in Leopardstown rather than venturing to Town Moor tell us about Frankie Dettori’s spare Santiago in the St Leger? He was favourite until it was confirmed that Pyledriver would be heading for the final Classic. I am sure that everyone would love to see the fairytale horse win and he does have the best collateral form. Looking at the profile of the race, I wonder what O’Brien is going to tell Dettori to do with Irish Derby winner Santiago as he was held up in rear that day in a poor race. Or is Emmet McNamara going to try and steal this on Mythical? If nobody else wants to go on, Subjectivist certainly will but his abysmal showing in the Great Voltigeur is hard to forget, as Pyledriver won easily with Berkshire Rocco only fourth. With the likelihood of guaranteed pace, Pyledriver’s biggest enemy might be the extra two furlongs, so what Martin Dwyer chooses to do could be key.

I wish I had taken a chance on Hukum ante post when he was double figure prices a few weeks ago because his participation was not confirmed. He is clearly a progressive individual and his owner has been winning pretty much everything else this season with his older horses against a mediocre Classic generation. He beat Subjectivist at Ascot and proved that he stays when winning the Geoffrey Freer and he is my idea of the winner but not at the price.

As One Master has failed to win when I have backed her this year, I am leaving her alone today. If she does not win the Park Stakes she will never win again as I give her no chance of winning the Prix de la Forêt this year as it is a better race than she won last term. Both of the three year olds have questions to answer and I will not be chancing Molatham with my jinx jockey aboard, so can veteran Limato fight off the years to win back-to-back races for the first time since 2018? Is Wichita favourite simply because Dettori is on it?

The Chester card is very disappointing with mostly small fields and Lingfield is not a great card either. I had to laugh when I read the SportingLife.com form analysis of Hiconic in the 3:50 – “Thriving at the moment over hurdles and each-way claims.” – that being the 7/4 favourite. While that one is off on the hurdles course, I would side with Russian Rumour, winner of a Bath Amateurs race last time and 1lb better off thanks to the apprentice’s claim today.

Who would have thought that on a Saturday with two big meetings there would be no decent bets? I had better start looking at Sunday’s cards...
