Watched it on LCTV, pretty awful. I guess this why they say dont take any notice of pre season results. A prem team would have scored at least a couple against us in the first half. Praet and Barnes were anonymous. Yuri, Cags and JJ looked ok.
actually Suarez was signed by Kenny at the same time as Andy Carroll however in same window as Coutinho we also signed Sturridge who before the injuries was brilliant for us and rumour was Brendan was the one who really pushed for him rather than our transfer committee .
Looks done Having Ricardo, JJ, Castagne and Fuchs for the fullback/wingback positions probably means we can comfortably loan out Thomas and bring him into contention next year after a full season.
If Ricardo and Fuchs are out injured until Oct we might need Thomas. Can't recall if that is Fuchs projected return date or I'm mixing him up with someone else. Newcastle are allegedly interested in Gray.
Re Thomas, worth keeping him around until Jan, Europa League group games and league cup with lots of games and some hopefully lower standard sides. Will get him minutes, get Ricardo and Fuchs back from injury and get him out on loan hopefully to a championship club in Jan. I’m sure there’ll be a lot on the look out.
Am seeing surprising amount of negativity around the Timothy Castagne deal on other forums - we are close to signing a 24yo versatile fullback with international and European experience for under £20m which isn't a bad thing. Sure he is not the class of Tagliafico, Reguilon and Gosens who we were linked with but the reality is that we are a Europa League club - this is an excellent signing and one who can reach that level in the future.
Don’t get the negativity either, and whose to say he isn’t that class. The negativity seems to be that he’s not a left back rather than about him as a player in his own merit. As depth and possible successor to Ricardo it’s a great signing.
We are linked with Fodé Ballo-Touré - a 23yo LB from Monaco. We are linked with Callum McGregor and Odsonne Edouard from Celtic again - apparently we are quoted £60m for the pair.
Apparently Castagne is a friend of Ndidi from their time at Genk and also close with Tielmann and Praet which is a good thing. As for a proper LB, we are strongly linked with Ballo-Toure and Targett - could get 2 fullbacks for the price of Tagliafico.
His links with the squad are good yes. I’m not sure who it would be but a LB on loan could be good. Another centre back and a winger/attacker would be a good window.
Historically, if we sign someone who's unknown, underrated or underwhelming they turn out to be great for us, and anyone rated highly it generally hasn't gone well. I'll wait until we've signed them and see how it goes. Still linked with Joe Bryan at LB too.
Its odd that we are still searching for another FB as well as Castagne. I know Castagne isn't a natural LB, but if you were looking for someone to cover injuries etc, you already had that in Justin, so what would be the point in signing Castagne AND another LB? Ricardo going to be playing RW when he returns?
We need the squad depth ... plus versatility ... Castagne can also play in a back 3 ... left or right side...
Seems like Ricardo's injury might be worse then we thought and in that case Justin is not good enough to play week in week out. Remember we are in the Europa League - could be playing over 50 games next season.
FYI about our deadwood: Adrien SIlva is rumoured to be close to signing for Spartak Moscow. Daniel Amartey's agent has said he wants to leave but he is still injured. Fousseni Diabate and Rachid Ghezzal were at training but aren't expected to stay. Matty James is still here until 2022 for some reason.
Shouldnt we be looking at young British players to ensure we meet our Europa League quota requirements?
