Where Bristol City, Nottingham Forest and rest of clubs finish in Championship table prediction
The full schedule for the 2020/21 Championship was released on Friday

It is now just a few weeks to go until the new season in the Championship begins and excitement has increased significantly since the full release of the schedule on Friday.

A new season means a blank slate for every team in the Championship, although the exception this year is Sheffield Wednesday who begin the campaign with a 12-point deficit.

Predicting just how the season will pan out is an extremely difficult task, particularly in a league as challenging as the Championship, but data-crunching experts have done exactly that.

And it's bad news for Bristol City, with the Robins predicted to finish 14th in the table come the end of the season, way short of their goal of getting promoted.

A supercomputer from unikrn has worked out a predicted table for the final standings in the Championship, based on factoring a range of the most informative betting markets in terms of influencing the final outcome of the season including league winner, odds to finish in the top six and relegation odds.

According to that data, Watford will clinch an immediate return to the Premier League by winning the title and Brentford, having suffered defeat in the playoff final last term, will land automatic promotion courtesy of a second-place finish.

Norwich City and Bournemouth are tipped to secure a spot in the playoffs, alongside Stoke City and Cardiff City - with the former looking for significantly better fortunes this term than they encountered last season.

Nottingham Forest, Middlesbrough and Swansea City are all being backed as contenders for a top-six finish, although it is expected the trio will eventually finish short of sealing a spot in the playoffs.

Millwall, Preston, Huddersfield and Blackburn round off the teams predicted to finish above Bristol City in the league.

At the other end of the spectrum, League One winners Coventry City are expected to avoid relegation but the same isn’t the case for Rotherham United and Wycombe Wanderers, who are expected to drop down to the third-tier.

Luton Town, having completed a great escape last season, are backed to narrowly avoid the drop once again, with the final relegation spot taken by Sheffield Wednesday - who are predicted to be unable to fight back from their 12-point deficit.

    2020/21 predicted table from unikrn

    1. Watford

    3. Norwich City

I don't take much stock in computer guesswork and predictions but I have this awful fear that we will truly struggle this season. After all the guff heard from our previous messiah about our potential and the subsequent farce of finding his replacement makes me ask if the top man is prepared to accept mediocrity yet again? I like most of you don't want to see our new man struggle but I really think he may have fallen for the bait hook line and sinker. Dean hopefully will whip us in to shape but if the wheels fall off early in the campaign do you think SL would pull the plug knowing that there probably isn't a manger out there who would even give us a second thought yet alone apply.

The menace of Covid 19 has changed the entire world including our beloved sport and team, and it's highly probable that a lot of other teams in our division will feel the same negative effects and let's just hope we weather this storm better than most and to hell with computers and their forecasts. Keep safe one and all.

I'm sure the algorithm must take into account previous Premiership experience, why else are Boro, Stoke and Huddersfield in the top 12, it certainly isn't based on last seasons form.

For Brentford and Bournemouth, a lot will depend on keeping hold of their key players, do that and they could be top 6, without them, they may struggle for top 10.

well they say it is based on "the leading betting markets" [ part of the algorithm ] biggest flaw here is the markets are based on the opinion of one or two odds makers in the "company" who have a gut feeling so and so might not do well so pinch the odds .. or have a major liability to a certain result … like say someone betting a few grand on being in top 6 or 12 … by pinching the odds on "others" it forces bets, thinking they are going to lose out so place early! … and help to balance the book.
the algorithm will see as a trend and believe that team is / will do well.
should you care to assume it will carry on where last season ended … 3 coming down will replace going up … so will be [ theoretically ] as good. However they will lose some of the best players which should make them the equal any of those that finished 4th to 9th. ………….. so for top 9 teams 3 from prem and remaining 6 is a good starting point.

[I use 5 points of reference with strengths up to 7 … but being biased CITY ALWAYS COME OUT A BIT HIGHER... so reduce by 12% City final score!]

For those that are happy, so long as we play attacking football, 14th should be ok. <doh>
For those that feel we need to progress from our last coach, will be looking to dust off the Out banners and replace the name..:emoticon-0127-lipss

last season we got rid of, argumentively, the top 3 teams in the division the 3 new comers [down ] do have the "money" but not the players or "steadfast managers".. I reckon on Bournemouth /Watford /Brentford at the mo [ along with City ] to be in the top 4 .. in the next 2 weeks it should all come clearer ….. then is the time to "pick" the finish?

I can only see the likes of 'Boro, with Dame Nellie in charge for a whole season (having spotted immediately where there problems were but was unable to sign anyone to shore up their defence), Derby, and Stoke who seemed to have finally found their true form at the vital point of last season doing much better than last time out.
I'd also expect Watford and Norwich to do well simply because they are yo-you clubs and seem to have the bouncebackability element in their make up. Birmingham under Karanka could well be top half.
Not so sure about Brentford this time round, especially if they lose Watkins and Benrama or Bournemouth under Tindall.
Forest should do better than last season and Millwall under Rowett could surprise again. Swansea, Cardiff, QPR, Blackburn will all want to improve again.
I'd expect Preston to be top half again under Alex Neill. They are always tough to beat home or away.
Can see massive struggles for Wycombe, Rotherham and Sheffield Wednesday who are starting with a -12 point handicap. Coventry playing their home games at St Andrews can't be easy, but they should have more than enough to survive.
I can only see more struggles again for the likes of Luton, Huddersfield, Barnsley and Reading.

Bristol City ? I'd be well happy with a top half finish, attacking football as One For says, and some consistent home form for once.

Like Angelic I'd be happy with a top half finish and decent football.
For me, anything less that top half and BORING football, we might as well have stuck with LJ (but I recognise that some people would rather have entertaining 5-4 defeats and relegation like we had under Benny, rather than LJ's boring football and championship safety.....).
As far as predictions though - I don't see how anyone can really predict until we know what players we are dealing with. When the window shuts I'll give it a go.....

whisper is there is a log jam! a number of irons dependant on "what happens next" so to speak … [ obvious really to a degree! ] no point in selling Fammy/ Niclas should the replacements not be forthcoming …. [ both possibly will resign in next fortnight.... ] JW was an opportunist punt, [vacuum'd him up before anyone else could ] had looked at him before and Wigan were [ are ] desperate for money [ cash flow ] ….
The trend is pick up continental players …. ? Whisper city has 2 on radar …

Well, the last incumbent was sacked for failing to achieve top 6.
It’ll be interesting to see what happens if that position eludes us again this season.

Bloody hell 14th I snap your hand of for that.

For me I don’t see us out of the bottom 1/4,
Unless improvements in playing style and consistency happen.

p.s Did you guys realise Holden took over from LJ at Oldham and was sacked after two months <doh> Our leader says he was the standout candidate for the job<laugh>

Especially if Holden's allowed the same 70 odd signings.

I think we may have a decent platform to build on with some additions to the squad, but for me I think it's almost essential for the club, the new Manager, and the players currently remaining that we beat Coventry at home on the opening day. They are new to this league and for us I'd say it's almost the most perfect opener we could wish for.
Because if we lose and/or play badly then the pressure will be on Holden almost immediately and the spotlight will be firmly on Ashton and Lansdown for the appointment.

I don't see Holden being a particular success just yet either, but I think bottom 6 is a bit pessimistic. <laugh>
