That isn't actually what the song says. It was also not that long after Britons were the slaves themselves. (Edit, at the time the song was written, they were actually still being enslaved.)

Britain was at the forefront of ending slavery in the west and passed the Abolition of the Slave Trade Act in 1807 and paid compensation that they set themselves, which was so expensive, we've only just finished paying for it.
Many of the Countries the BBC are trying to respect, still have active slavery in greater numbers than occurred throughout the trans-Atlantic Trade.

 

The tunes will be played but the songs won't be sung (the arena will be empty).
