This is stretching the conversation a bit but I tend to believe that gambling (and alcohol fwiw) advertisements should be illegal in the same way that tobacco ones are.

Worth pointing out too that it's already been noted that there's a problem here, in the introduction of the recent so called 'whistle to whistle' law that came in. Which bars any gambling advertisements between the beginning and end of any live sports event, horseracing excepted.

This is such an unsympathetic statement.

Sympathy is earned, not by stupid choices.

You talk as if addiction is purely a choice, which isn't completely true.

Ah, that's good news. Not for my wallet, of course.

We were one of the remaining few outside the top six (who don't need to stoop that low for their sponsors) who had resisted too. It's the result of a bad previous decision, so shame we have been forced into it.

Not everyone can afford self-control. Fact is, gambling hits the poorest in society hardest, and a large proportion of football fans are in the demographic it hits. Of course, there are terrible knock-on effects that go hand-in-hand, like physical abuse in families etc. Not to mention a lot of impressionable kids who associate gambling with the glamour of football.

I've got nothing against gambling the practice, just think it shouldn't be advertised throughout nearly every club in the PL. It's of course everywhere in football, and Southampton doing it or not is unlikely to change significantly how much visibility it has across the country. I just liked the stance we took - must be easy to grab a betting sponsor from anywhere (which is why we've had to do it now, given the emergency): takes a lot more time, effort, and thought to find a non-betting sponsor who will pay what we need. As last season started, BHA, Sheffield United, and Saints were the only three clubs without a betting partnership - so it was quite a proud stance.

I actually wish I’d bought one now.

Well, not really, it’s a bit of massively overpriced polyester, but one with the LD Logo could be a collectors item soon.

So make a stance and don't go to a game. Practice what you preach.

Is it a symptom of something else?

I guess it’s where you draw the line for drugs, smoking, alcohol, gambling and other vices.

I feel most believe they should be allowed to be practiced, but probably shouldn’t be encouraged

Yeah, I think that last sentence is unlikely to be the case, personally. The vast majority of bettors do so harmlessly. There’s no such thing as harmless smoking.

No comparison really, though I do understand - and to some extent share - your reservations.

I'm sorry if I've ruffled feathers and maybe I have come over as heartless with my comments. I'll leave it there. COYR.

I’d never wear the damn thing anyway, so no problem there. I’d just put it in the draw with the half dozen other rip-off shirts I swore I’d never buy but for some reason did.

Don’t worry about it. I’ve had my problems with addiction, for what it’s worth; but I didn’t take offence at your comment.
