Hi guys,

The flat season is coming to an end and I'm a NH novice, so punting for me ends after the Arc too, barring a flutter on Champions Day. I basically have an idea that I will only play Ante-Post between now and March, with the aim to go into Cheltenham Festival with a few fairly-priced tickets and to enjoy the festival and seeing the results and developments of ante-post prospects throughout those 4 days, and to see how well we read the form lines and indeed how badly!

I'm just toying with one or two ideas, and I wondered if you think this might work:

I am thinking about running a series under the thread title "Horse In Question", where I will select a specific horse in the National Hunt sphere and I pose various questions about the horses form, achievements, targets and progression, and we get the varied opinions of everyone on the board.

I felt it would be a good way to build up our own knowledge and indeed understanding of different horses profiles, gives us a new angle on horses who will be in opposition to our own fancies, and to act almost as a commentary as the season progresses- an excellent reference point to look back on when the dust settles after the various big races between now and the final race at Cheltenham on day 4.

Looking at perhaps one or two threads per week.

I just thought it would be good to have an alternative to the daily thread and the heavy focus on the races themselves, and just literally have a horse under the spotlight, if you will.

Let me know what you think, and remember, don't be afraid to say if you don't think it sounds interesting- <ok>

Very nice idea TopClass - but avoid Kauto Star (general pissing contest might ensue) and beware of slightly rose-tinted views on any horse trained by Mr. Henderson from certain quarters <laugh>

Oddy, who's quarters could you possibly be referring to?!? Yes, excellent idea, old boy. I’d certainly welcome any informed and lively discussions re the NH sphere.

In days of yore, as a few will recall, I used to operate a Cheltenham Festival staking plan in the months leading up to the Festival but my ante-post wagers re that event are now much, much reduced mainly for 2 reasons – (i) the strength of the market on the morning on each raceday and (ii) the general uncertainty, due to the increased number of races, regarding which race many horses will go for (especially the novices). Although there are times when it is prudent to step into the Cheltenham ante-post market, in the main, I don’t think the same level of value exists as it did a few years ago.

I did a few antepost bets at Cheltenham for the first time last season. Nowhere near a sniff of a winner <laugh> - well Peddlers Cross and Big Zeb were both 2nd but I had placed win bets <doh>. Great to debate but I'll only be betting on the day.

It did cross my mind that World War Three might begin at the mere mention of Kauto and/or Denman.

Nice to see some positive feedback so far, I'll hold fire for a few more bits of feedback before making a decision <ok>

Sounds like a brilliant idea to me.

And i would agree that we have all had the Kauto/Denman/Arkle 'discussion' a few too many times. Oh the joys of 606. <laugh>

For consistency maybe we could use Arkle as a yardstick.

in comparing Long Run and Time For Rupert we could go

"I think Arkle would giving Long Run 2 stones and a beating, and I think Arkle could give TFR at least 3 stones and a beating, which makes Long Run at least a stone better than TFR."

Looking at debuting the thread on Sunday evening/Monday morning, after the excitement of the Arc has all settled down and we've all got our slippers and a brew on the go.

Seems the natural timing to introduce the thread as we begin to make the transition into the NH season.

Great idea. If I have understood correctly we will end up with quite a lot of horses each with their own thread. I would suggest that as each one is put forward it becomes a sticky for a short while but we can't have them all stickies so I could create an index of them (not a sticky) and insert that index into Horse Racing Forum Index. I'll set it up now to see if that is OK.

TopClass: Very good idea and there'll be some interesting responses. I have a feeling that a Mr.ChippyMinton will be in his element here, with his enormous knowledge of medical/veterinary equipment; you will be hearing from him I'm sure? As for ante-post bets, don't touch 'em with a bargepole anymore, mostly a bookies' benefit bet, although one can get lucky, must admit. A very small ante-post e/w Patent on horses you really fancy ain't a bad wager at all. Nearly, but nearly, had it off a long time ago the year Davy Lad won the Gold Cup, the other two lost by a neck and a length with the jockey on the latter admitting to a poor ride. Still cleared 500 quid on the whole e/w bet, and that for a fiver e/w Patent. (All three had they won would have been 25,000 quid plus - ah well). Not a bad bet................Hope this idea of yours takes off! <ok>

TopClass. If you like the structure I've set up I can change the titles to whatever you like; it's your baby. Just thinking of locating all these at a later date - hence the indexing.

Perfect Ron :) Exactly what I was envisaging.

The idea being that we hold the first thread as a Sticky until the next one is posted. Once a thread is removed from a Sticky to accommodate the next one, we will then have a link to the previous thread(s) in the Spotlight Index so that we can refer back quickly and easily.

Does that sound like a fair structure to all?

TopClass, how about doing the two most improved horses over the last two years..
Year before last I'm sure it was Thousand Stars; and last year I'm putting forward Rubi Light- who runs this weekend.
