The UK (England and Wales) Government will announce a 10 mph increase to the maximum speed limit on UK (England and Wales) motorways next month. This means that cars will be able to drive up to 80 mph on motorways in England and Wales.
I have stated England and Wales, because this increase in the speed limits may not be passed by the Scottish Government and the Northern Ireland Assembly.
My own thoughts is that yet again this government fails to understand that the environment, saving fuel and people's lives must come first and the needs of business and other forms of money making should not be a priority.
Anyway, look forward to getting to/from Leeds quicker for games, but more hold ups as more cars will crash and when they do, they will almost definitely be fatalities. While your driving at 80 mph and thinking how wonderful it is, watch your fuel gauge go down and down and get your wallet out even more, because it's going to cost you big time and that's before you even consider the other environmental damages.
Only my own thoughts, I'm sure others who like to drive fast or be allowed to drive at a faster speed if they wish to, will be more than happy.
 
I have to disagree with you in regards to the speed limit boab, especially the part about putting peole lives at risk, because when the 70mph speed limit was introduced in 1967 the safety measurements of cars (breaking distances for example) was no where near the capabilities of cars on the road today. I don't believe a 10mph increase will jeopardise safety.

I do agree with you though on one thing. If you have a small car the extra fuel consumption may be more noticeable than a larger engine. That said, we still have 3 lanes so people can still cruise at their speed and others overtake in 2 of them (not that many people abide by that notion anyway) :)
 
No-one really drives at 70 on motorways or long country roads etc. anyway. Doubt you'll really notice a difference in people actually driving faster.
 
Won't make much difference boab,what's more dangerous is drivers who sit in the middle lane doing 60mph not overtaking anyone-idiots.
More often than not it's just safer to go with the flow & cruise at 80mph.
 
I don't think it will happen Boab even if the government wants the extra fuel duty, I think everyone takes 80mph as a non official limit as I have been overtaken by countless Police cars doing 80mph.

But to change it will cause a whole load of ear ache from Eco groups.
 
80 mph is perfectly safe and most people will do 80 or over regularly, anyway.

Anybody that is overly concerned about their fuel economy probably goes less than 70 and will continue to do so.

Most commerical vehicles seem to have their speed limited these days, so I see no commercial benefit.

Yes but the French have better roads,ours are falling apart, & our service stations are crap compared to theirs.
Drive on most moterways in this country & there's usually miles of coned-off lanes yet no-one's working.
It's all a load of bollards.

Yes but the French have better roads,ours are falling apart, & our service stations are crap compared to theirs.
Drive on most moterways in this country & there's usually miles of coned-off lanes yet no-one's working.
It's all a load of bollards.

maybe if the road tax was spent on roads,rather than other things,that might not be the case.
Other option,toll roads,

We're being lied to ladies and gents, global warming is a natural phenomena its happened before the planet goes through a cycle of heating up and cooling down. (oh and btw all that recycling you do? we pay countries like India to dump it as landfill there as recycling is far too expensive only a small % actually gets done)

Couldn't agree more - I'm lucky enough to do quite a bit of driving in France and it works well with the 130/110kph.....also French drivers are better educated on the use of lanes on their motorways - they overtake and pull staight back in....all so civilised!

I used to listen to Terry Wogan spewing this kind of drivel every morning on Radio 2, I'm sure your kids kids will hark back to your statement, when the Gulf Stream has moved so far south that the icecaps have melted and the earth is flooded. No pile of statistics will change this fact, it's happening today and will continue to get worse for as long as man treats the earth like a pile of ****e. Of course there is natural damage, it's been going on for as long as the earth has existed, no environmentalist would disagree with that, but man has speeded up the process and countries need to slow this process down by careful regulations, most environmentalist state that we need to slow down the damage to the earth, not stop it. Man doesn't have the right to do what he wants to the planet, sooner or later we must wake up to that fact, if we don't then future generations will suffer.
It took more than 20 years to broadly accept that mankind is causing global warming with the emission of greenhouse gases. The drastic increase in the emission of CO2 within the last 30 years caused by burning fossil fuels has been identified as the major reason for the change of temperature in the atmosphere. More than 80% of the world-wide energy demand is currently supplied by the fossil fuels coal, oil or gas. It will be impossible to find alternative sources, which could replace fossil fuels in the short or medium term. The energy demand is simply too high. Another issue is the non-renewable characteristic of fossil fuels: It took nature millions of years to generate these resources, however we will have used them up within the next decades. Alone the shrinking supply will not make it possible to continue as usual for a longer time.

What a great post - don't normally see eye to eye with the Leeds boys - but this sums up global warming and the bollocks we are being force fed by goverments that want to tax us for the air we breathe!:emoticon-0150-hands
