Thought about Maitland-Niles previously, before KWP had really got his chance. He’s a talented young player but has been a victim of his versatility. I think part of the reason he’s looking to go is to hold down a regular position elsewhere (that and Arsenal being a basket case of a club). I think I read that his preference is to be at CM. Other places seem to say it’s as a winger. Part of the problem with being shuffled about a lot I guess. Just a quick Google and Arsenal are touting him for £20-30m. Got Everton written all over that one. Just like Alex Iwobi. I’ll say it again. ****ing state of Arsenal. Shambles, that lot.
Reads like pretty standard negotiating tactics from us to me. We aren't going to offer our lowest price first are we? Can't wait til we beat them this season
I would like to see M-N join us, primary in midfield to replace PEH but very flexible regarding filling in elsewhere if required Young, lots of potential, very quick and easy to mould inter system - if not Mckennie then certainly would look at this kid
I don’t think we should be looking to take anyone from Arsenal of all places in order to improve our defence. Big contracts, asking big fees and we’re talking about a team that looked at David Luiz (having failed at two big clubs) at £120k a week and thought “Aha! Eureka! That ought to do it!”.
That might be the very reason to look at their players! They wouldn’t recognize talent if it was right under their noses.
They collect broken toys and **** nobody else wants. Arteta is great but he’s got a huge job on there. The expectation is much greater than the tools he has available. Now they’re sacking off all their scouts to get Kia Joorabchian to handle their recruitment. A bit like Wolves do in being aided by agents. It’s worked for them but I think it’s unbelievably suspect. Your guy to identify players is also the man who has most to gain from you buying a lot of overpriced ****e that nobody else will take? Great. Good ****ing plan. Sack all your staff when you said you wouldn’t and partner up with a confirmed shady tosser. **** off.
No, you wouldn’t buy a defender from Arsenal. Anyone who’s been through their academy has great technical ability though. I’d have taken Iwobi btw. In fact I was surprised Arsenal let him go; Everton will quite possibly ruin him. Ralph could have been the making of him imo.
I don’t think he’s a bad player, he’s far from a finished package. He was a squad player for them until Emery started the rebuild. Then he was part of a very expensive team which didn’t do a whole lot despite having some very good attacking players. That player is worth £30m+? Everton got mugged there. Not to mention he was a big signing for Marco Silva and then they binned him a few months later. He’s definitely not looked worth the money so far. But hey, that’s also just Everton.
I'd rather not take big club misfits full stop personally. Think they'll generally have higher wage demands than buying elsewhere.
Bertrand and Romeu have done ok. A lot depends on the misfit. If they are young and leave a bigger club to find first team football that is ok but if they are just interested in the money and lifestyle like Lemina then no thanks.
People talk as if they wouldn’t move to a new job for better pay and conditions. That’s what most of us do, so I accept that players may chase the money....that’s ok as long as they do their best at a new club.
It also happens to be why we're an attractive destination for players in Europe. A situation where players don't move for better pay/conditions is one where we struggle to put out much talent.
Crystal Palace will battle Fulham for the signature of Southampton's English midfielder Harrison Reed. The 25-year-old spent last season on loan at Craven Cottage. (Football Insider)
