He’s the only specialist defensive midfielder we have. He’s a solid player and Ralph commented on his professionalism earlier in the season after being out of the side for so long and asking for extra work to do. He’s just only got one thing he’s good at. I think we need to be looking past him. He’ll play a part and be a good hand this season when he’s called upon and then sign for Espanol next summer on a free when his contract is over. Actually they’ve just been relegated. Bookmark that prediction for next year!
A lot of people finding reasons to keep Reed. Am I alone in thinking he’s just not up to what we want? Yes, lovely lad who came through the system. great game against Everton several seasons back and the appearance against City. Terrier like image, but I just don’t think he can last in a good Premier League team. 5-8m for a lad who just has not featured for Saints with any regularity is kerching for me.
I am in the "keep him if we can" camp and not for any of the reasons you have listed. Sure it would be nice to have an academy lad break through - but they are either good enough or they're not. Before this season with Fulham I'd have 100% agreed with you but he looks to have upped his game this year and been a crucial part of a successful team. Of all people, we should know it can take a few years for players to really develop; think of JWP 1 or 2 seasons ago - he was a completely different player and almost off to Watford! Add that to the fact we probably need to buy another CM if we sell Reed then it makes sense to keep him (if we can).
I think he’s better than we’ve seen so far for us and he’s proved that this year. 5-8m is peanuts for a standout player in the Championship. If he was a Fulham player would we be looking to buy him? No. But he’s ours and has the ability to fill a role we need. He is a better player than Romeu at this point and more in line with the style of player Ralph wants (midfielders who can run a lot). I don’t see a benefit in selling for less than his real value and then having to buy an extra player for that position when we know money is tight. We may be forced on that route and if that happens then so be it but I would consider it to be disappointing that the timing just didn’t work out.
I'm definitely in the keep-Reed camp. He is a younger than JWP, and let's face it, JWP only really came good in the last two seasons. We haven't seen Reed play for at least two or three. Maybe he's not good enough, but let's give him a season to show what he's got. He won't lose any value and we can always give him an extension. People acting like he's gonna turn us down, haha. He's not Van Dijk for f*ck's sake. You only 'bite someone's hand off', if you know that player isn't going to re-sign. If Ralph tells him he has a chance, he will stay. A lot of people barely gave Armstrong a chance, and he's practically our best (non-Ings) player now.
on JWP, that was because we had a dick of a manager called Mark Hughes. He and JWP just didn’t get on. on Reed, you think he’s good enough, so fair enough. I don’t. I’d rather buy another one if that’s what we need to do. I felt we needed another one last season, but Ralph didn’t seem to (or wasn’t allowed to).
Fair point on Hughes, although that said JWP was has never been at the level Ralph has got him to. I'd love to see whether Ralph could achieve with Reed. For what its worth i am not really that confident reed is good enough - I really don't know. I just think it is worth finding out if Ralph can work his magic as he is already a Saints player. Looks like he is off anyway so all this is likely irrelevant
I suppose so, or that he would rather that £8m go elsewhere and get by with the same CM's as last season (assuming a Hojbjerg replacement).
