I also suspect that the older part of the working population pay disproportionately more of that tax too (not unfairly so, it’s just you expect to get paid more the further into your career you get). So you’d need a lot of 25 year olds paying 20% on £25k to replace the tax take from a 55 year old paying 40% on £60k.
I guess as you get older you get wiser. It was a long long time ago so i don't suppose it will do any harm to mention when i did jury service one case was someone selling ex mansfield hosiery knitware on a market stall. There was a question regarding the value of some jumpers, and the company rep asked to see the exhibit as the label sown into the collar would be different if it was for a boutique or a supermarket chain, the same jumper. In the 90's when i was working in Romania winter came quick so i needed to buy some clothes, when i was home for chrismas and went to the pub someone said i must be doing well wearing a top like that (??) next day in town i see the same top on special offer reduced to 40 quid, i paid 4 out there. Was always a fan of Doc Martins, so go into the shop in town, 115 quid and then i see they're made in Thailand or Vietnam FFS. All to our traditional high standard says the sales girl, but if you want made in the UK we have these at 160. I know i'm turning into a grumpy old man, but there's more to be grumpy about these days.
Spinach with a big egg in the middle. Best enjoyed if you cover the crust in the garlic butter that comes with the dough balls
Oh, and don't ever let it be said that I am not a man of culture. Verily am I wise to enjoyment of life's finer things, forsooth!
Spoke too soon there, even though I am using legit Microsoft office I lost access to Excel and Word. Magically fixed by my good lady during the night after I stormed off to bed. Good job I didn't throw the ****ing thing at the wall, think that's beyond even her capabilities.
I bought a pair of 'Clarks' weaver boots,£110,Made in Vietnam!!! And we wonder why we've got unemployment?Let's get the factorys open and start producing again FFS.
Clarks reopened their UK factory in 2017, they couldn't operate it at a profit and they had to shut it again in 2019. Loads of people say lets make things in Britain, many have tried in recent years (including me), but people aren't willing to pay for them.
Complicated subject. Land Rover who make premium product at premium price 75,000 poundish are bit by bit moving production out of the UK to the new factory on Slovakia. Nissan who make run of the mill cars that sell for 25,000ish have just committed to keep production at Sunderland.
I suspect that Clarks, like most other companies, aren't prepared to run at a marginal profit anymore. The greed factor has kicked in and if they can reduce production costs and make more cash by using cheaper labour, they'll do it.We don't benefit in the savings, the Company does. If we are going to try and kick start the economy then attitudes need to change and Britain needs to start becoming self sufficient.I'm not arguing with what you're saying at all because it's fact but when will the penny drop with Governments that it's the only way forward?1000's/millions of jobs could be created, unemployment would reduce and thus lessen the burden on the welfare state. We,as consumers, need to start buying British, not just clothing....Everything!!!
I like the sentiment but for example not enough people will buy these at £250 when Levis are £60. https://hiutdenim.co.uk/collections...r9K7pErV_lx3cM6aphnUlUrts-fgTkGRoCKOsQAvD_BwE
It isnt possible to become self sufficient! What British carmakers do we have ? People will not want a British made phone over an I Phone / Samsung . We have imported over half our food for over a century . How would we export things if we had a buy only British way of life !
If they could just get it to wash its face, they'd have stuck with it, it was very good PR for them and they really wanted it to work. Sadly, it didn't come close, either with regard to cost, or production levels.
There's absolutely no reason for Land Rover to move production out of the UK, they can achieve the prices required to make production here viable and long term they risk damaging the perception of what is ultimately a very British brand. Though they almost certainly want a production facility in the EU, to make sure they can trade via there to avoid any duties that we're about to get inflicted on ourselves, just as Mini are doing.
But that's exactly the point in question...British Brands and perceptions. When you look inside the tongue of a Clarks product and see the words 'made in Vietnam',it rips your heart out.As for duties and trade tariffs, best wait and see the outcome of that before jumping the gun?
