26th of August is national dog day. ..... most of what follows I read in our local SA4 mag delivered this morning. ........ Wales has a tradition of dog lovers.
According to Welsh legend, Gelert was Llewelyn the great's favourite hound,. Tragically. He killed Gelert with his sword after mistakingly thinking the dog had attacked his baby , Then he heard a baby cry from beneath an overturned cradle and blankets. When he investigated, he found his son alive next to the body of a large Wolf that Gelert had slain. ....... Llewelyn was devastated that he had killed his loyal friend, and it is said he never smiled again. .......... Most of you probably know this since you were kids, And there is a memorial of this loyal dog. ....... BEDD GELERT. = GELERT'S GRAVE?
One of Wale's most famous dogs was. SWANSEA JACK. A black retriever from Swansea who regulary responded to cries of help from anyone in difficulty in the water of the Docks and riverbank, bringing them to safety of the dockside. ..... Over his lifetime it is reported that Jack saved the life of 27 people, and in 2000 , he was named DOG OF THE CENTUARY.
Other dog breeds connected with Wales include........Welsh Corgi........Sealyham terrier.......The Welsh Hound........Welsh Sheepdog...... Welsh Springer Spaniel...... and the Welsh Terrier.
I must point out again that most of the information posted here is taken from our local SA4 mag.
I really like dogs and go bloody mad whe I hear of cruelty to them.
As there is no football on now, and seems pretty quiet, I though it would be the best time to post thi , as it may interest all the Dog lovers. .......... CHEERS.
    P. S. How many of you have seen the Memorial to Swansea. Jack ?

We had a brindle coloured boxer. She lived until she was 11 and a half.

Fabulous pet - she really was one of the family.

She died in 2010: don’t have a photo of her on my phone to upload, so found this which is a really close likeness.

I've only ever owned two dogs , first a sheep dog called Twm short for Twm sion cati ( Welsh Robin Hood ) a funny, mischievous dog who I bought from Swansea Dogs home when it was just off Sketty Lane in Singleton Park , bought to keep the wife company when I was away in the Army ,lovely temperament and great with kids who sadly died of a heart attack in front of the wife when he was only about 8 ,Then we had a cross German Shepard called Sheba who lived until she was 19 (and even now I still get upset thinking about it ) we had to a have her put down due to her age and a debilitating illness , I held her whilst the vet injected her and since then I've vowed never to have another .Maybe one day though

Matt, I did likewise with Maggie. She had had a heart attack 18 months earlier and was never the same. Then all of a sudden on one day she just deteriorated - the vet came to the house at 11.30pm and he said that her body was closing down.

Her 4 paws were cold, and she had literally just gone blind. The vet said she would be gone in 6 hours in agony as her lungs would fill ...... or we could let her slip away peacefully.

I held her as he injected her then told me she had gone. I carried her to his jeep.

    We still have her ashes.

Never say never Matthew. Fill the hole left by Sheba. Our GS cross Sandy lived until she was 16&1/4, I plucked her out of a cage as a pup, on 20 May 1996, as me n Mrs Bubbs bought our first house, and held her as they pumped that blue stuff in, on 16 August 2012 and not a week goes by without thinking about her. I’ve lost uncles/aunts/grandparents (and me dad last year to dementia), and nothing prepared me for the grief I felt losing Sandy. I was bereft for weeks. As you say Matthew- one of the family.

I absolutely love dogs! Had a scruffy poodle, an old english sheepdog and two shelties in my time. We're babysitting an old sausage this weekend (that's what the Mrs told me anyway).

If you're an animal lover then any pet will be a part of the family and a great loss when they die. It's especially true of dogs though as they're so loving and giving.

Here's our dog a cross between a Saluki and a Greyhound. We got her from Greyhound Rescue Wales. We had to drive to Brecon to meet her when she was with her foster mum. She is a fantastic dog but a hopeless guard dog as she sleeps about 18 hours a day!

I am sorry if my post brought back sad memories, I assure you that was not my intention, But it did show how many are Annimal lovers are here. I have loved all the dogs that I have had, and the last three have died in my arms. They were all part of the family. We kept saying no more, but again we could not resist, and now we have a rescue dog we have named JAX .......... For those of you who are in two minds, just remember they get you off your backside to go for walks. I find them better than humans in many ways, trustworthy, companionship, and they don't hold a grudge like Humans. ....... Allthough, some are sad, I have enjoyed reading your posts.
Bubbs, Off course you can bring your cat, and post pictures if you like. ..... don't forget Dogs day on 26th Aug.

Victor - on the contrary, you’ve brought back some very many happy memories. Obviously, it is sad when it is time to say goodbye but the sadness is a reflection of the happy times and friendship that they brought into our lives <cheers>

We had 2 lab puppies fifteen and a half years ago from Ross. Have 2 they said. Company for each other when you are out they said...in the puppy stage which lasted at least six years they had ruined at least two leather suites and early doors a breakfast bar....in puppy classes they were gold stars but as soon as we left the sessions they did their own thing...to be honest they have been great company but had different personalities....one liked water the other didn’t.....we had to put one down a couple of weeks ago and though horrible we were able to be there with her....very sad times but we do have a mutt and he has been with us for nearly eight years ...he’s a mammys boy whilst the lab is a daddy’s girl...wouldn’t be without them....
Before the girls we had a gsd rescue who was a superb specimen although afraid of her own shadow
    I could go on but....
