In the YEP today, there's an interview with Shaun Harvey about the transfer window. He says that all our main transfer targets turned down Leeds to go to a Premier League club, with Gareth McAuley his example who ended up going to West Brom.

He goes on to say that the last summer, when we'd just been promoted, Leeds were aiming for targets to help them 'stay in the division' which meant it was easier to get these players in early on eg. Billy Paytner, Connolly. But that this summer, because we wanted players who would help us challenge for promotion, we aimed for players who had offers from the Premier League.

He also defends the wage structure, saying it's very competitive, and that in football today, spending money of transfer fees isn't as necessary.

He would say that wouldn't he. I think if he was honest he'd say:-

"the Leeds faithful will pay through the nose for 3rd division football so we'll take full advantage and squeeze them dry while we sell our best players and bring in old knackers on loans, and freebies" And that hasn't changed apart from the recent protest which, if nothing else, revealed Bates's contempt for the fans with his morons rant. A truly toxic pair of crooks whose sole intention is making money.<steam>

Just me who thinks Harvey's lying about the wage cap?

Richard Sutcliffe and Duncan Castles - two of the most reliably informed journalists as far as United are concerned - have both said it exists and I can't see any reason why either of them would make it up; it's not in their interests in any way. Obviously Harvey, Bates and Grayson do have an agenda which is to keep the fans happy by pretending that there isn't one.

And even if there isn't, Harvey's opinion (if it can be called that) that wage spending is 'like a transfer fee' is surely some sort of joke. It's as if he's saying that you either spend a transfer fee and pay no wages or you spend no transfer fee but huge wages. There's a balance, Shaun. And for all the two clubs he tries to mention who have overspent, he fails to mention how many have spent and found success - indeed how many have refused to spend and have stayed right where they are just like we're doing right now. In fact, scratch that. We're going backwards right now.

Disgraceful edict from a shockingly poor businessman, chief executive and human being in general. **** off you piece of dog **** Harvey.

I'd have rather we spent the bit extra on Johnsons wages to keep him, instead of the wild ****ing goose chase we had with Bowyer and paying him more than any other player we have. That Gwyn Williams is to blame too, what the **** does he know?

it wasnt the point of given Johnson a bit more, by upping it a bit more we would have broke the wage structure and therefore other players would have wanted more money, I wish wed have kept Johnson n not brought Brown in but wouldn't want to cause unrest

What pisses me off is that Harvey was boasting about how 6 players we tried to sign ended up at Premier League clubs, as if that's some kind of sign about our ambition. All that shows is we've either gone for unsuitable targets, or we haven't done enough to persuade them to sign for Leeds. It's like 'oh we had a crap transfer window, but we tried to sign good players'. Blackburn tried to sign Ronaldinho but they didn't get him, so it means **** all that they tried.

We went for McAuley, who'd have been a quality signing, but ended up with O'Dea.

Needless to say that all 6 targets were on free transfers.

not sure, if we'd have paid Johnson the wage we pay our players like Becchio as a player who starts most games, and not just a squad player which is what was reported, I think we would still have him. He's still a fairly young improving player who seems to be making an impact on the premier league. He'd have been worth putting him in line with the likes of O'Brian and Becchio.
