EFL Statement: Sheffield Wednesday verdict An independent Disciplinary Commission, appointed under EFL Regulations, has ruled that Sheffield Wednesday will receive a 12 point deduction for breaching the League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules for the three season reporting period ending with Season 2017/18. The sporting sanction will take effect in season 2020/21. The Club was charged in November 2019 and referred to an independent Disciplinary Commission, which conducted a full hearing at the end of June 2020, before finding the Club guilty based on the fact that the Club should not have included profits from the sale of Hillsborough Stadium in the Club’s financial statements for the period ending July 2018. The Club was found not guilty of a further charge of breaching its duty of utmost good faith to the EFL by deliberately concealing information from the League in respect of filings made in respect of the Profitability and Sustainability Rules. https://www.efl.com/news/2020/july/efl-statement-sheffield-wednesday-verdict/ EFL mess up again Wigan 12 points instant but next season for Sheff Wed
This is quite incredible, I know it’s different rules that have been broken but they have royally ****ed Charlton here. I can’t see this being the end of this one.
I can't see how it's fair to slap Wigan this season but make it next for Sheff Wed. Nowt against Sheff Wed like, just doesn't seem fair.
I'm gussing it's because Wigan went into administration while the season was going whereas Wednesdays hearing wasn't held until after it had finished.
Bearing in mind that we would end up fighting them in our latest attempt to get out of this crappy league then I'm happy for them not to be relegated this season.
Think I read somewhere that Wednesday's punishment if awarded this season would have no effect on them as they weren't in the playoffs or a relegation fight so a reduction would be meaningless. I could be wrong but think Derby are another club under similar investigation.
Sheff Wed's offence was back in 2018 though so three seasons before they get a slap. Wigan get royally ****ed by new owners, who had passed a fit and proper persons test a month or so before, then got royally ****ed by the EFL within a week. Nah, that's complete bollocks in my eyes like.
birmingham have an issue as well, what a mess. For Sheff w it took about 8 months to sort it out !, look at Barton's trial put back a year why ? it only needed about 5 people in court, plenty of room etc tut tut. We won't hear the last of Bournemouth either, as a camera proved the ball was way over the villa line no matter who proved it, but it was a goal, Soton won't make to much of it though i expect.
I was expecting this tbh. Not too sure they'll get anywhere as the new season is due to start in six weeks and can't see this being dealt with through the courts in such a small time frame.
I also assumed that as Wigan were dealt with during the season that's why their points were taken off then and as Sheff Wed were dealt with once season had finished then the points deduction comes into force next season. Why it couldn't have been handled during the season, your guess is as good as mine. Clubs that got a **** amount of points though over the course of a season shouldn't really be taking matters further and try to stay up by default.
Again speaks volumes of the dysfunctional people that run football. The governance of the game is a joke and so corrupt. I feel for Wigan, but in the grand scheme of things Sheff Wed and Derby are bigger draws in the Championship than either Wigan or Charlton.... The day they get people in who actually know how to run this game the better.
